Turkey lifted a ban on women wearing the Islamic head scarf in state institutions on Tuesday, ending a generations-old restriction as part of a package of reforms the government says are meant to improve democracy.
The ban, whose roots date back almost 90 years to the early days of the Turkish Republic, has kept many women from joining the public work force, but secularists see its abolition as evidence of the government pushing an Islamic agenda.
The new rules, which will not apply to the judiciary or the military, were published in the Official Gazette and take immediate effect in the majority Muslim but constitutionally secular country.

Ataturk is turning over in his grave.
The first step to making it MANDATORY..................
Once more, the Turks are proving that a non-Islamist Muslim state is an impossibility. It flies in the face of the Koran, the Haddiths, etc.
And Ataturk was no angel. He was involved in the Greek genocide in Turkey and possibly the Armenian one also.
Drip, drip, drip.
I have seen a very revealing set of photos taken of graduating classes at a girls’ high schools in Egypt.
1965- All were stylishly dressed in Western fashion, no headscarves
1975 - Most in western dress, a smattering of headscarves
1985 - About half and half
1995 - Majority in headscarves
2005 - Every girl in full burqua treatment
More like scatological..................
Turkey had a chance to enter the modern world. They blew it.
...and sharia is just around the corner. Get Turkey the heck out of NATO.
“The ban, whose roots date back almost 90 years to the early days of the Turkish Republic, has kept many women from joining the public work force”
what a pile of drivel
Attaturk recognized the hijab for what it was and BANNING the symbol of female subservience it made it possible for generations of Turkish women to advance professionally and socially
NO convergence with the Western codes of civilized behavior.
The form of representative selection of legislators and executives in a constitutional republic is greatly at odds with the concept of Islamic ideology. One might say the term of “Muslim democracy” is an oxymoron.
Islam and personal freedom are mutual exclusives.
Now women who do NOT wear the symbol of subservience will be intimidated and harassed
obamar’s muslim brotherhood pals at work.
The president of Turkey is one of obamar’s biggest international pals. He’s a muslim brotherhoodie.
Nasser may have been a Socialist, but he was no fan of the Islamists.
Good.
It’s no more right or appropriate for Turkey to ban headscarves than it is for America to ban the wearing of the crucifix.
Ataturk was always stupid to think he could forever suppress the religious faith of Turks.
If Turkey chooses to become a fully Islamist state, so be it. But it’s rather silly for the West to demand secularism from them. We wouldn’t stand for it if foreigners demanded that of us.
How is strengthening the hand of the religious in Turkey going to improve democracy?
What will it take for Turkey to get kicked out of NATO?
That’s where you’re wrong. Headscarves and hijab reduce women to subhuman, ignorable objects. If they wanted to wear, say...necklaces with the crescent moon, as Christians wear Crucifix necklaces or a Jew might wear the Star of David, fine. I’m *not* thrilled about Islam but a necklace doesn’t deny humanity.
A bag over the head is a raw denial of personhood. They no more deserve the “freedom” to deny the personhood of an entire class of ppl than Hitler did.
