Bob Costas Weighs In On Redskins Controversy: "It's An Insult, A Slur" (video)

BOB COSTAS: Think for a moment about the term Redskins and how it truly differs from all the others. Ask yourself what the equivalent would be if directed toward African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians or members of any other ethnic group. When considered that way, Redskins can't possibly honor a heritage or a noble character trait, nor can it possibly be considered a neutral term. It's an insult, a slur, no matter how benign the present day intent. It's fair to say that for a long time now, and certainly in 2013, no offense has been intended. But if you take a step back, isn't it clear to see how offense might legitimately be taken?

NBC makes me sick that they have to push their socialist agenda during half-time.

Soon, they will be claiming that conservative speech offends people and should therefore be banned, which is the end game.

I hear the international union of ticket scalpers is suing the NFL. They want to be known as the ticket redistributors.

The asshole neglected to mention Whites in his descriptive list of ethnicities. What is the bigot suggesting?

Well then don't consider it that way. There, problem solved and at no cost.

How many years has Costas been a sports commentator? Why didn’t he say anything sooner about this outrage?

I watched that lie from the liberal on NFL today ... insult, a slur... only to the liberal liars. I do not use redskin as any form or insult or slur to amy indians whom I have known and meet often. The liberal liars are simply trying to stir up things and create a drama the does not exist exist - except in the mind of the liberal liars...

One, doesn’t matter, it has been around for many years. If not recognized at the time that it was a problem, don’t bring it up 30 years later.

Two, if you take the liberal, PC attitude, we would have to change too much of our language to satisfy the PC crowd.

Three, I am really tired of all the supposed folks that are offended by everything! Get a life!

Real Indians on real reservations jokingly refer to members of their tribe who have made good and gotten a job in DC as “Washington Redskins.” I know because I’ve been there.

I suppose “Redskins” could be an insult, a slur...depending on how well they play, but let’s just stop and think about this for a minute. How many teams use team names like, Losers, Nazis, or Jerks? Don’t teams normally pick names that sound tough, honorable, or victorious? So, Bob Costas seriously wants me to believe Redskins was chosen as an insult and the players wear that name because they meant it as an attack on an ethic group? Seriously? I think it’s far more probable the name was selected because it represented people who were known for their toughness. In other words, it was meant to honor Redskins.

My great-grandmother was full blood Creek. In the 1930 census she listed her race as “negro” because blacks had it better than Indians where she lived in Alabama. I live in the D.C. area so I see Redskins all the time. I am not offended. The only thing that offends me is that I don’t have enough Indian blood to get some of that casino money!

I guess it’s ok to call blacks colored since the NAACP is not being attacked for insensitive racism.

It seems to me if the intent is not to slur it’s not a slur.
