Gay rights supporters wage a quiet campaign to push Republicans to the middle
Washington Post ^ | 10/20/2013 | Peter Wallsten

Almost no elected Republicans support giving gays the right to marry. The party’s influential social-conservative wing sees “traditional marriage” as a defining issue. And while most major Democrats are rushing to embrace same-sex marriage, none of the most prominent potential Republican presidential candidates have taken that step.

But a powerful group of Republican donors, who see the GOP’s staunch opposition to gay rights as a major problem, is trying to push the party toward a more welcoming middle ground — where candidates who oppose marriage rights can do so without seeming hateful.

The behind-the-scenes effort is being led largely by GOP mega-donor Paul Singer, a hedge fund executive whose son is gay, and former Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman, who revealed his homosexuality in 2010, long after he had left the GOP leadership.

Singer’s advocacy group, the American Unity Fund, has been quietly prodding Republican lawmakers to take a first step toward backing gay rights by voting for the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. The measure, which is expected to come to the full Senate for a vote as early as this month, would ban workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Singer’s group recently hired as lobbyists two former GOP lawmakers, Tom Reynolds (N.Y.) and Norm Coleman (Minn.), who say they oppose same-sex marriage but support workplace protections for gays.

Armed with new polling data and talking points, organizers are coaching lawmakers and potential candidates on politically smart ways to talk about gay rights to reassure general-election voters while not alienating core conservatives.

A softer GOP approach, they argue, would boost the party’s chances with young voters, women and centrist independents, all of whom tend to be supportive of gay rights and have drifted away from the party.

With more and more Americans living in states where Gay Marriage has been forced upon them by judges, legislatures and homosexual voters, the more opposed the normal folks will be to Gay Marriage.

Under these dire circumstances, it is imperative that the GOP place a Pro Family anti Gay Marriage plank at the center or their platform and that every GOP candidate make opposing Gay Marriage at the center of their campaign.

The GOP must have all their elected officials pass a Anti Gay Marriage Amendment to the US Constitution.

Why are they so intolerant of our beliefs?

Aye, Gene Robinson was “consecrated” by the Episcopalians in 2003 and the ELCA followed precisely ten years later with the election of Guy Erwin to be “Bishop” of one of its California Synods.

Quotes used because I believe both elections/elevations to be contrary to Scripture and therefore invalid.

If the republican party moves any more toward the middle they’ll be far left.

A clearly flawed analogy. They are already to the left of the middle.
Moving toward the middle is exactly what the GOPe must do to survive!

If his son was boinking sheep, would Singer be claiming we should celebrate bestiality?

The answer is, of course, yes.
That is why accepting the false conclusion that not supporting a pathology is exactly the same as opposing it, or condemning it.
The pervert goal, of course, is to force normals not only to accept perversion, but to support and promote it morally and financially.

NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

In the late 70s, the perverts' whine was, "All we seek is a little tolerance."

How has that worked out?

What was once known as “The love that dare not speak its name” has become “The love that won’t STFU”.

When any liberal talks about “the middle”. they really mean to the left.

When any liberal talks about “the middle”. they really mean to the left because the middle has proven time and again that they are against gay marriage.

Which of course results in fiscal liberalism/statism.

We’ve already got one pro-abort, pro-homosexual political party. A 2nd one is unnecessary.

Didn’t millions of folks just rush to join the ECUSA and ELCA after they did so? Nope. The GOP can expect the same “success” if they do the same.

How will that work out for him when he finally stands before God at the final judgment?

The amount of pro-gay GOP legislators is sufficient that no push back against the homosexual agenda is possible in national politics. DADT reinstatement? Not happening, Romney and Ryan would not touch it. Hate crime law repeal? Nobody even remembers that. Federal Marriage Amendment? Failed nearly a decade ago, would not get 30 votes in the Senate today. The Supreme Court has semi-legalized gay marriage, will fully legalize soon, barely a peep from the GOP.

As far as I can tell, Iowa is the only state where gay marriage is legal but opposed by the majority of citizens. The other states with homosexual marriage are pro-gay and are becoming more so, not less so with time.

If the GOP promote homosexual marriage, then they are dead as a party. It’s the Christians and evangelicals who are the back bone of this party.

If they turn on their base, its over.

Norm Coleman was never a solid conservative, and he was too cowardly to fight back. I would imagine he admires his successor. People in MN can never get enough of the liberal Kool-Aid.
