These White Boxes Hiding in Plain Sight All Over the World May Be a U.S. Government Spy Tool

The German newspaper Der Spiegel over the weekend revealed that not only did the U.S. monitor the cellphone of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, it also allegedly utilized the American embassy in Berlin as a listening station by means of a windowless structure filled with hi-tech gadgetry on the roof to monitor cellphone and other sensitive communications.

An Israeli intelligence analyst has now discovered similar mysterious white structures positioned on the rooftops of many key American embassies including in Beijing, Moscow, and Tel Aviv and published the photos to support his claims. While the structures appear to have a solid exterior, they are actually permeable by communication signals, according to the German report.

Does it scare anyone else that foreign governments are now releasing intelligence on us and our structures in foreign lands? I am completely against what the government is doing, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the governments of the world might do the work we want to do ourselves. Will we one day be welcoming Russian tanks in our town squares or British armored vehicles in our cities as our liberators? Ironic, no?

If you know anything about foreign affairs, every embassy spies on everyone in the host country. That is their main mission most of the time. This is not news and it makes us look stupid to be upset by it.

Here in the USA, cameras are set up along the interstate highways, usually near large signs giving important information, changes in speed, exits, etc, so they usually go unseen. When the SHTF, local patriots might want to disable them at the first opportunity. Nice solar panels supplying the electricity... ummmm.

Well,

1. Why are you against the NSA doing signal intelligence on foreign leaders. That is there job. I would be shocked and dismayed if they did not.

2. Is there anyone in the world surprised that US, Russian, Chinese, UK, French etc embassies are places where their spies set up machinery to listen in on others? I would be shocked it this were not the case.

3. Is there any evidence at all that this has anything to do with Google and whatever they are building?

It is one thing to be upset that the NSA spies on American citizens. It is another to be upset that they spy on Merkel’s cell phone. You should be upset if they don’t.

LOL! They cleverly painted that monstrosity in mid-sixties lounge colors to disguise it's true identity.

I'm guessing that one doesn't belong to the NSA, more likely the NEP (New England Patriots.)

All governments spy on each other...allies or not. It just makes sense to know what the other players are up to. Spying is not the problem here. The problem is the expansive nature of the spying, the fact that NSA is spying on private citizens, both here and abroad and the fact that the NSA been tapping the private phones of world leaders. That is not ‘Business as Usual’ and it’s most certainly not naive to think that this crosses a huge line. obama is wrecking the image, honor and prestige of this nation abroad just as surely as he’s wrecking our economy, polity and rule of law here at home.

I agree. The NSA is supposed to spy on foreign leaders - that's their number one freaking job.

Their number two job is to not get caught - which they are failing at right now.

And they excel at spying on the one group our constitution expressly forbids them from foisting their intrusions on - law-abiding US citizens in good standing.

Leave me alone, Angela Merkel's fair game.

I really don’t care if the NSA does sigint on foreign soil.
It’s the monitoring of US citizens that bothers me.

That said, I will speculate on these strange structures.

They probably contain multiple hi gain antennas. I’d guess small dish antennas and yagi types. They hide them in the plastic box for the same reason they hide large dish antennas in those huge plastic domes...to hide the direction the antennas are pointing.

NSA has large ears in space, the huge NRO satellites in geosynchronous orbit. But those sats have a hard time picking up cell phone traffic because the same frequencies are used nearly everywhere and this means the sats pick up so much interference that individual cell system traffic is buried under the noise.

If I set up these monitoring posts I would scoop up all the local rf traffic and uplink the data to the NRO sats on other, quieter, frequencies.

Um, yeah. I thought this was kinda well known.

Like how the Soviets built their DC embassy near the top of Mt St Albans, by the National Cathedral, becase it’s the highest point in DC and has direct lines of sight to just about every government facility and foreign embassy in the region, including NSA, CIA, DIA, Pentagon, etc.

Heck, before he died the last few Jack Ryan books Tom Clancy wrote involved a secret agence located directly between the CIA and NSA that had a structure just like this on it’s roof to suck down line of sight microwave and laser transmissions between the two.
