Out of curiousiy....your description of Byrne makes him sound awfully center/ left for an Alabama Republican. What was your objection to Young?
Hank
Sorry for the late reply. I was traveling when you asked me and then I have been catching up.
The one part of my Byrne description you apparently missed is that after he switched parties, in one position in higher education he rooted out corruption in the the Junior College system and some of the people he fired were corrupt African-Americans. The state teacher’s union has gone after him since and in fact backdoor paid for ads against him in the most recent primary run off for the GOP nomination for Governor. And he led in the first round and they teachers union ads probably cost him the nomination.
I thought that was a terrible thing. I thought this time Byrne had to win this time or it would scare off politicians all of the country. If you want politicians to DO THINGS in office, you must reward those who do. You can not throw them over for the next candidate you hope will be even better.
