Evangelical Historian David Barton May Challenge Cornyn in Texas

Christian conservatives are trying to draft historian David Barton to challenge Sen. John Cornyn of Texas in the Republican primary this spring, Politico reports.

Despite being voted one of the most conservative members of Congress by the National Journal in 2010, Cornyn apparently isn’t conservative enough for tea party activists who have elevated Texas Sen. Ted Cruz to hero status.

Barton is an eloquent orator, broadcaster, and author who heads WallBuilders, a national organization that promotes “the moral, religious, and constitutional foundation on which America was built,” according to its website. His critics have labeled him anti-gay and some historians have called his writings distortions filled with half-truths.

Barton supporters have created two Facebook pages, “Draft David Barton for Senate,” and “Draft David Barton for US Senate,” both of which already have more than 2,200 likes and members.

Cornyn, a staunch conservative who has served in the United States Senate since 2002, is viewed by tea partiers as a cautious conservative unwilling to buck the establishment like his fellow Texas senator, Cruz. Despite endorsements from conservative heavyweights such as the National Rifle Association and National Right to Life, as well as having close to $10 million in his campaign coffers from most conservative donors, some tea party supporters don’t think he’s conservative enough to represent their interests.

“We know he is not just like us, and we resent him claiming to be,” said Julie McCarty, president of a tea party group in Tarrant County, Tex., according to Politico.

Though Barton enjoys immense popularity among his followers, his outspoken views condemning homosexuality have earned him plenty of criticism.

The non-profit Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights organization whose mission is to fight hate and bigotry, lists Barton in its Intelligence Files database, which contains profiles of prominent extremist organizations.

But how has John the minority whip voted lately?? Here's his record:

Cornyn (TX) - 03/04/14 - 83% (Average) - 85% (Heritage) - 82% (CFG) - 88% (ACU) - 75% (FreedomWorks)

I want a conservative alternative to Cornhole, who is not conservative. He is a moderate establishment type and not interested in my values.

This is the truth. Cornyn didn't do a thing to help Cruz out during his filibuster - not even bring him a simple glass of water, not fill in for him for 2 minutes - NOTHING! His campaign had the gall to call me that day, and I utterly refused to contribute one penny, telling the guy what I thought of Cornyn's lack of support.

Cornyn is a better Senator than a Republican from the Northeast (where I'm from originally), but only because he HAS to be. He has "Establishment" branded into his forehead, and I cannot stand that when the Establishment not only fails to seriously stand up against the radicals, but belittles and undercuts those in our ranks who ARE willing to stand up to the radicals. Last night's Cuccinelli loss is, tragically, typical - the Establishment RNC barely lifted a finger for him, and he lost by a couple percent against a corrupt Clinton toady (as if there was any other kind). The Establishment would rather lose elections than give up their power to others in the ranks, and that is DISGUSTING! Now McAwful will be able to ensure that the electoral process in Virginia - a key swing state - will be thoroughly corrupted in 2016, all because the Repukelican Establishment (including Cornyn) couldn't get their way and took their ball home.

Well, screw them and screw Cornyn! I'm supporting Barton.

Here in TX I’m sick of hearing radio ads telling us how conservative Cornyn is and what a high conservative rating he has.... Bull poopies-—did he stand with Cruz? Did he vote against that cloture vote? No he did not. He’s just the male version of what Kay Bailey Hutchinson was-— now Cornball is trying to move more right but when the SHTF last month he was a GOP-e establishment guy. Go Joe Barton and you have my vote.

I’m in for Barton if he runs.

But “Christian conservatives are trying to draft historian David Barton” is a LOOOOOONG way from “David Barton is running for Senate”.

David Barton on Glenn Beck right now. He announced he is NOT running. He says the time is just not right.

Our loss.

He is what happens to Conservatives once they’ve been in Congress for a few years. They become products of the money managers - those that actually seem to be in control.

If you actually expect different then you are one of those hope for change folks, not to be confused with the Hope and Change Democrats.
