The Drumbeat Begins: Cuccinelli for U.S. Senate in ’14?
Bearing Drift ^ | 11-7-13 | Shaun Kenney

So sayeth the DC Caller:

Conservative writer Quin Hillyer is the first person to openly make a full-throated case for Cuccinelli to throw his hat into the ring to take on incumbent Sen. Mark Warner, a popular Democrat in the Commonwealth.

“The best news from Ken Cuccinelli’s hugely disappointing loss in Virginia’s gubernatorial contest yesterday is that Cuccinelli is now free to run for U.S. Senate against Mark Warner,” Hillyer wrote.

“Not that Cuccinelli will want to hear this now,” Hillyer elaborated. “He has a large family, and his day job as state attorney general will end in the new year, and he will need to make money somehow. That’s tough to do while running statewide for office. And it’s even tougher when one is already exhausted and battered from a long and brutal statewide race. But Cuccinelli is actually well positioned, politically, to make a go of it, even against an incumbent as seemingly bulletproof as Warner has been.

Provided he NEVER HIRES HIS CURRENT CAMPAIGN TEAM TO RUN THIS SENATE RACE PERIOD UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PERIOD this could reasonably happen.

I’d be a full-throated supporter. Besides, Cuccinelli’s resources will be better, and this will be a campaign where his national issues converge with his Virginia reputation and boom — Mark Warner will have more on his hands quicker than he can say “no one will lose their health care because of Obamacare” — right?

Thoughts?

UPDATE: Jim Riley over at Virginia Virtucon thinks it’s not just a good idea, but a masterstroke:

Cuccinelli can argue that Obamacare is hurting the economy and destroying full-time job opportunities as a means to hammer Warner on jobs and his failure to do anything significant in the Senate. No wonder Warner was part of the meeting of 16 Democrat U.S. Senators who are up for reelection next year to visit the White House yesterday to talk about the problems with Obamacare.

Boom.

Was McAuliff part of the Libertarian In Name Only set up?

Is this not just a replay of 1992 and 1996 presidential election shill strategies with Perot -- when McAuliff was Clinton's bag man?

I have a sneaking suspicion that McAuliff might wind up being a "be careful what you ask for" candidate for the VA Dems.

He has a string of slimy business deals and fundraising things that may come back to haunt him while in office.

Mark Obenshain so far has won the Atty General's position. WaPo described him as a "Cuccinelli clone." I like that.

What if the fully (R)-controlled legislature begins investigations led by Obenshain into McAuliff's slimy business dealings all next year -- and they find some real juicy stuff?

And then what if Cuccinelli decides to take on Warner for the Senate seat in 2014 while all the dirt is billowing out of McAuliff?

McAuliff becomes of no use to Warner, or Hillary. He may even be forced to resign in the process.

Cuccinelli's support was/is deep. He should draw upon that for political advantage.

FReegards!

Rove said today in the WSJ that the Dems have realized that it’s cheaper and more effective to fund Libertarian candidates than added spending on their guy.

Apparently Sarvis was funded by rich Dems from Texas.

I know that name is poison on FR but it made me think...

Yes, there’s a lot of good in this idea.
Besides, no one else wants the job...

Heck, the GOPe might even throw a few bucks his way to make Warner spend money.

Just curious about what your thoughts were about Cuccinelli’s previous campaigns.
How did he preform, come across, etc.

Here’s an article on the Libertarian funding of about $15,000 to help Sarvis collect
signatures to get on the ballot. It mentions Liemandt and his contribution to
the Libertarian PAC of some $150,000 out of $229,000.

Missed the whole 2009 election while moving LOL! (no electricity most of the year while I upgraded the shack).
Don’t know anyone who’s seen him in person either so I’m not much help.

He represented a ‘purple’ district for a long time so apparently he has good person to person skills, that shows in the close result of his 2013 campaign too.
I’d say he is a better than average “practising” politician from what I know of him but have no personal knowledge.

Thank you. This is quite disconcerting to me.

Thanks. I know absolutely nothing about him or his abilities. He seemed to
come from no where to close the race based on polling data that indicated he wasn’t
close. However I think he still needs help and if he stays on the scene maybe that
will be forthcoming.

No way will the Cooch ever win with a 14 point loss among women voters. He is forever poisoned by his rape stance and you can not win when that many women vote against you.
