Democrats all over the country rejoice at the news that Terry McAuliffe defeated Republican Ken Cuccinelli in the race for Virginia governor on Tuesday. To them, this victory is a resounding triumph over the conservative right, and a clear message to all Americans that the radical ideas of the Tea Party have no place at the national or state level. To them, this is a loud and clear message that the Tea Party and their radical agenda are on their way out.
What is the real message of the Virginia gubernatorial race?

Do you think it is possible, that in the midst of a GOP civil war, that the Establishment GOP would allow for Virginia to fall into the hands of a Democratic governor? It is possible, and it is not improbable either.
Virginia is home to thousands upon thousands of government employees and dozens of federal institutions, many of which are reported to have been adversely affected by the government shutdown. The government shutdown was orchestrated by Tea Party newcomers who have proven to be thorns in the side of the business as usual GOP’ers.
Perhaps in an effort to show the Democrats, who hold the bulk of power in Washington, that the Tea Party does not represent them, and in an effort to further cripple the national image of the Tea party, the Establishment surrendered Virginia. And not just surrendered Virginia, they worked with the Democrats to do it.

Had the Republican candidate had nearly as many resources, and been able to bring even a small number of the libertarian voters into his camp he would have won.
A Republican who captured the majority of the libertarian voters, and turned out conservative voters as effectively as the Democrats turn out their base would have won by a large margin.

It would not be the first time that the establishment Republican threw the race over to the Dems rather than let the Tea Partier win.
Why wasn't he ready for the assault he'd get as anti-women's rights? That's how the opposition ALWAYS paints conservatives, yet Cucenelli was like a deer in the headlights when his views on women's rights were attacked. Like I wrote yesterday, a smarter candidate would've been ready with a press conference on his grandmother's grave (or whatever) with every female in his life there explaining how much he respects and cares about women.
He was within two points a week ago. Why didn't he keep on fighting? Whining about the RNC?....the way they backstabbed Ted Cruz's could've-been-success stopping Obamacare, he had to know that was the enemy he was against. Why was there no earlier background research exposing the RNC working against him and the dems supporting the Libertarian?
We need candidates who are articulate enough, smart enough, and dedicated to conservative values enough to get out there and win. The RINO and dem tactics are stale. The candidates we support should be ready for them.

I see Virginia as a huge loss both for Democrats and RINOs.
Not only did the Democrats have to pour far more resources into the McAuliffe campaign, but they also had to spend on the third party spoiler. And on top of that, the RINOs had to work to undermine Cuccinelli, diverting money away from him to support the already going to win Christie. And only *then* did they win.
At the national level, this means that there are almost insurmountable odds against the Democrats and RINOs pulling this off in the rest of the country. They just do not have the resources to do so.
By spending huge amounts of money, they “captured the hill”, from which they can only look at the mountain they must surmount.
Bottom line: if the Tea Party can take out a few to several more RINOs in the primaries, the RINOs will be so weakened that the conservatives may very well wrest control of the national convention away from them.
And this means that scoundrels like Karl Rove will be pretty well cut off from the gravy train after that. He will get hired by some corporation until they figure out that he is dead weight.
McAuliffes win say to me that Virginia has looked upon Maryland their sister State and decided they want what Maryland has.
A tax and spend Democrat governor, higher taxes, same sex marriage, more illegal immigrants, and millionaires moving to other states . Oh, and watch out Virginia, your gun rights are about to go out the door.
Just remember you get what you vote for.

Great rant! you are absolutely right we conservatives need build momentum away from the RINO wing. For decades now we have been told to hold our collective noses and vote for the likes of Mccain,Romney,Dole.I would love to see the day when Karl Rove has to hold his nose or suck his thumb and vote for Ted Cruz! Absolutely not. Look at what happened when Murkowski and Lieberman lost primaries. The establishment ran them as third party and they hung on to their Senate seats. There should be a law that once someone loses a primary they're no longer eligible to run that time in that race.

Agreed. A victory for the RINO's, but at huge long term costs. They have permanently alienated the TEA party. They have created a situation that in GOP primary contests the party will be split for the general election. They can not count on the "TEA Party" to come home...
What happened is clear. The Liberterian again played the spoilers role and gave the victory to the leftist Democrat.
The idea that the Liberterians take votes from both parties is completely misleading. 95% of the votes that they take are from conservatives.
Every conservative candidate needs to have a plan for victory that doesn't depend on the press or the RNC or anyone but the voters supporting them. Conservative candidates also need a network of supporters, volunteers, and campaign database services like those enjoyed by the Democrats. We're got our work cut out for us!
Which is precisely why Republicans need to run candidates that can win those votes. Except for the 5% purists, the rest of the Libertarian voters will vote for and support conservative candidates. But they won't vote for statists or RINOs, and they are attracted to constitutionalists more than social issue conservatives.
Some careful planning and outreach can win many of the Libertarian voters since for most of them they and conservatives share a similar goal - more freedom and less government intrusion into society.
A constitution and freedom loving candidate will get Libertarian votes even if the candidate does not agree fully with many Libertarian goals. A RINO won't get "moderates" or Libertarians.
