Tennessees second poorest county will suffer even more if the federal government buys 120,000 acres of land in that area, near Memphis, all for the stated purpose of wildlife preservation, said that countys mayor.
Lauderdale County Mayor Rod Schuh told Tennessee Watchdog Friday that his county, while poor, relies on farming and agriculture as the primary drivers of its economy.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlifes plan to expand the Lower Hatchie National Wildlife Refuge, assuming it buys out as many properties as it can, will rob the county of its most valuable commodity, Schuh said.
Primarily, almost 60 percent of the land that the government wants to preserve is prime farm ground.

The federal government already owns more than 60,000 acres in Lauderdale County. The 120,000 acres that the feds want to purchase encompass Lauderdale County, as well as land in Tipton, Haywood and Dyer counties.
Schuh said the federal government doesnt pay proper tax levies on the land it does own in his county. Furthermore, Schoh said the feds dont plant quality trees on the land they own, especially trees that are good for future lumber needs.

That would be a big fat NO especially if the land
is currently in agricultural production or even if
it could be. If anything, the government should
be selling off land. We sure as hell can’t afford
to spend money on this stuff.
What a racket. Gov’t uses taxpayer money to deprive citizens use and access to formerly private property.
The fed pays “Payments in lieu of taxes” but they are notoriously behind in their assessment when property rates go up. When they go down, they are pretty quick about cutting their assessed value, so the ratchet works against the local government both ways.
When your broke what do you do? Buy more land of coarse.
Just when you thought it was bad enough to live near Memphis....
You might if you had a license to print money.
Mayor Schuh needs to shut up and eat his peas.
Shuuush!..its called collateral in the pawn industry....You need more money?...What do u have to hawk?....Land?...ok...10 cents on the dollar...Lets see if the deal goes thru.../s

Yes, poor west Tennessee has become the pits.
I was born in Memphis, back when it was a fine city.
It had the nations best water, best fire department, always voted nations quietest and cleanest city.
When the blacks hit 60%, they took over and destroyed most all that was good. Poor old king Cotton died back in the 80s to 90s.
Time for the GOP and Tea Party to start doing their “thang” and recruit these people for conservatism.
Isn’t nutcase Rep. Steven Cohen from Tennessee? The perfect example of how a mentally deranged white leftist wacko-job can get elected in the South.
Tennessee is the “Volunteer State” but Cohen’s election makes it the should be “Voluntarily Committed” state.
good to see you are still posting
Agenda 21
I wonder what shale formation lays underneath this county.
