Federal gun charges decline despite Obama executive action

More than a year after the Sandy Hook school shooting, President Obama’s directive to amp up prosecutions of federal gun laws hasn’t made much difference in how many people are charged with gun crimes.

U.S. attorneys that prosecute such cases charged 11,674 people with breaking federal gun laws in the fiscal year that ended in September, compared to 11,728 people the year before.

“The federal gun charge numbers are not an accurate reflection of the Department's efforts to investigate and prosecute gun violence,” said Allison Price, a spokeswoman for the Justice Department, in a statement. “The fact that we may not prosecute a gun case in federal court does not mean the case is not prosecuted at all.”

Gah, this is so aggravating in its lack of data.

“Federal Gun Charges” are meaningless unless they are parsed into categories.

Federal Felons cannot even live in dwellings with guns or ammo, whether or not the felon knows there is a gun or ammo there.

Federal Felons cannot possess or use a gun, even for self defense, though many of them desperately want a gun for this purpose. Having to choose between getting murdered and having to go to prison for defending yourself stinks.

Commission of a federal crime while you have a gun or ammo in the area is still a gun crime, even if that gun or ammo was not an issue in the crime at all. This catches a lot of “first timers”, who had a gun but committed a white collar or other nonviolent federal crime.

Many people have been put on the “no gun” list for psychiatric reasons, but not by doctors, but by bureaucrats. And they have no idea they are on the list, until they try to buy a gun. They are not criminals by any definition. Except if they repeatedly try to buy.

Well, once Holder drops the charges against “his people” there just aren’t that many whites left to prosecute.

People don't cause crime: guns do. Only government can protect us from guns.

They won’t arrest and prosecute a big chunk of the largest group of gun law offenders (Holder’s People) so of course the stats are down.

Well, the administration can fix this anomaly by prosecuting the criminals responsible for Fast and Furious, one of the worst gun crimes of our generation.

Oh, wait...
