What this shows is that nobody in congress has any intention of cutting spending or even slowing its growth. The train is heading for the cliff and nothing can stop it. The only difference between the two parties is that the Dems wouild drive the train over the cliff at 100 mph while the Repubs would drive it over at only 75 mph. Either way we’re screwed.

Are we correct in casting this as a spending issue?
Or is it really an individual liberty issue? And isn't that really a moral issue?
Or is it really a question of literally stealing from future generations? Which is, without doubt, a moral issue.
Casting it as a spending issue -- an accounting matter -- isn't nearly so powerful as casting it as a moral issue.
Of course, the left doesn't understand morality and would be aghast at such an approach. But the majority of the country would grasp it more quickly than if it were an accounting matter.
