Controversial preacher Harold Camping dies at 92

OAKLAND, Calif. - The radio preacher who predicted "Judgment Day" would come in May 2011 has died in northern California.

A statement released late Monday by his Family Radio network says Harold Camping "passed on to glory" at 5:30 p.m. PT Sunday. He was 92. The statement revealed Camping had a fall at his home November 30, but he was in weak health due to a stroke since 2011.

Camping gained a national following through the Family Radio network of stations he helped found in 1959. He conducted daily on-air Bible studies and hosted a nightly "Open Forum" call-in show about Bible questions. The network includes a station in Emporia.

But Camping became an international laughingstock when he warned "Judgment Day" would occur May 21, 2011 with the second coming of Jesus Christ. He went on to say the world would end October 21, 2011.

Camping admitted to reporters he was "flabbergasted" when his prediction proved false. Donations to his ministry dropped noticeably after that, and Family Radio was forced to sell several of its most powerful FM stations to stay afloat financially.

The Family Radio statement notes Camping is survived by a wife of 71 years.

He has competition from Paul Begley in the “prediction” racket.
94.7 wfme is now a country music station due to Camping.
Much to the wails of all three listeners in my immediate area.

Anyone recall his 1990’s prediction?

The Bible says there are signs of when the second coming will be but it also says that no person knows when. It is completely non Biblical to say you know.

He got fooled by a number of these pranks from hell. He finally got a clue.

Many people are permanent exiles to the Religion Forum, without this thread they would never know!

Harold’s last day on earth. The end time prophet has met his maker. No more need for matching and passing numbers around. No more cockamayme ideas curving and carving and stretching and twisting the Bible into a pretzel. This world has lost a calm winded kook. May he rest in peace.

Only God knows for sure, but I think he was a Christian.

I watched him over the years drift deeper into his prophetic error.

We’ll know the season but no man knows the day, is what scripture tells us.

Doesn’t he have a son to carry on the money grubbing? It’s a generational career choice in this racket (do I need to list the names?)

Joan Fontaine was prob the actress you mean.

When WWIQ 106.9 in Philly went from Camping’s company to Merlin Broadcasting—and a conserv talk format that has since come and gone—they “stunted” by playing REM’s It’s The End of the World As We Know It.

Camping’s prediction was that in each time zone there would be an earthquake; REM’s song starts, “that’s great, it starts with an earthquake...”

The parody religion Church of the SubGenius also predicted a given time for what they called the Rupture in which the UFOs would carry away the elect at 7 am (in what time zone?) on July 5, 1998. It came and went and they later said they got the year upside down. Thus, I guess it’ll be in 8661 instead.

Interesting that he had a stroke in November 2011 after spouting about the End of the World in May 2011. Some people have minor strokes before the big one. Perhaps his mind was not all their in May 2011 when he said outlandish statements.

Billy Graham’s son is the same way. Why can’t these kids think for themselves career wise. I always question military, actors and other “family careers”. Oh and don’t forget the worst….politicians.
