Starting Monday, Illinois same-sex couples facing terminal illness can marry nearly six months ahead of the states new marriage equality law taking effect, a federal judge in Chicago ruled.
U.S. District Court Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman has ordered the Cook County Clerks office to immediately issue marriage licenses to all Illinois same-sex couples who can provide a doctors declaration stating that one or both of them has a life-threatening illness that would prevent them from marrying after the marriage equality law takes effect June 1.
When you have a terminal illness, every day is significant, Camilla Taylor, Marriage Project director for Lambda Legal, said in a statement. Even though we know the freedom to marry is coming to Illinois, the default implementation date of the new law is too far away for these couples. While no one should be told that they cannot marry for a period of months, for couples who are dealing with a life-threatening medical condition, the delay in implementing Illinois marriage law could turn out to be an absolute bar to being married at all.
The order only applies to Cook County, but allows same-sex couples from other counties throughout the state to seek a marriage license in Cook County if their marriage takes place within the county, according to Courtney Greve, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Clerk David Orr.
The [courts] injunction was directed only to Orr, so he is the only the one who must enforce this decision just Cook County, Greve said.
Johnson Colemans ruling allows same-sex couples in need of an emergency marriage license to apply for one instead of taking their individual cases to court as three same-sex couples already have done. In fact, Johnson Coleman already granted licenses to two of the same-sex couples named in the lawsuit seeking Mondays ruling and another federal judge granted a license to a similarly situated couple late last month.
BuzzFeed first reported news of the case on Sunday night. Lambda Legal would not provide information about the case on Friday or over the weekend, with a spokesperson telling BuzzFeed only that information would be available on Monday after the hearing.
The new process, which Orr tweeted is already available, offers a streamlined application for these couples, according to Lambda Legal.
The requirement is that rather than go to court, there is going to be a physicians certification form that couples will need to get filled out by their doctor and we have agreed to put that form on our website for the couples to download and use, Greve told BuzzFeed.
Odd that life-threatening medical conditions are so prevalent among those seeking a same sex “marriage”. I wonder why.
This season’s Bubonic plague is more virulent than usual.
My guess is in Illinois there will be a lot of miracle recoveries coming soon.
Awww...its all about the benefits....
We all know why.
Because political correctness denied us the power to put these typhoid Mary bung holers in isolation when it would have worked.
Even now we allow them to spread the disease among their lot without fear of punishment.
They could title it the Aids Exemption!
That’s what it is really about.
Homosexual “marriage” is about financial benefits and trying to feel normal. While nothing can make them feel normal, gay “marriage” sure can reap a lot of financial reward. Avoiding estate taxes, family medical plans, tax deductions... it adds up.
My prediction is that we will end up seeing a lot of “married” homosexuals who haven’t changed their lifestyle one iota, but have entered into “marriages” purely for the financial gains. They may never even live together. We may also see a lot of roommates getting “married” for those financial gains... and then getting “divorced” when they decide they actually do want to get married.
Once marriage and the natural family structure have been destroyed, what will extreme leftists go after? It doesn’t seem there is much left for them to destroy.
So can someone claim death in advance of it actually occurring if it means getting a tax break? That’s what this is about, right? Settling the estate?
Don’t see how you can claim you are married before it legally may occur.
There is no law anymore. Just faggots prancing around the bench in black dresses.
Darn, just darn the population is 67% gay, 72% black and 56% Muslim, so I guess majority does rule. /sarc
Yep. They are after Social Security survivor's bennies...
They'll burn the churches, the books, the Christians, and not necessarily in that order.
