The abject stupidity of “zero tolerance” is spreading into the private sector. That manager clearly had discretion but no, he felt he had to enforce no matter what, blinding him to the embarrassment for himself and his employer to come. People just have no judgment anymore. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, what with “nonjudgmental” being elevated to a virtue, but here's one of the many downsides to that.

“That manager clearly had discretion but no, he felt he had to enforce no matter what”

Not the first time I’ve seen Nazi restaurant managers. I asked to hold the gravy on a breakfast platter at Cracker Barrel one time because I have Celiac and was told it was “policy” to forbid such special requests. So I told him (loudly) so other patrons could hear, “So, your policy is to poison your guests?” He backed down, muttering that THIS TIME ONLY he would make an “exception”. He was definitely right about the “one time only” thing. Never went back. I actually sent in a detailed written complaint to corporate and a few months later they sent me a free-meal certificate FOR ONE!
