Senate adopts plan on BadgerCare changes in response to Obamacare problems

Madison — More than 70,000 low-income adults would keep their state BadgerCare Plus health coverage for three more months and a larger and poorer group would wait the same 90 days to enter the program for the first time, under a plan advanced by the state Senate Thursday.

The legislation passed 18-12, with all Republicans voting in favor and all Democrats opposing it, and now goes to Republican Gov. Scott Walker, who first proposed the measure to deal with the troubled rollout of the federal law often referred to as Obamacare. Sen. Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center) voted for the final bill but joined all Democrats in voting for several failed amendments that would have provided BadgerCare coverage to more Wisconsinites in January.

Walker said he would sign the bill Friday.

"In 2014, everyone living in poverty will be covered — for the first time — under Medicaid in Wisconsin. No more waiting lists, and no more enrollment caps. Wisconsin's unique solution to health care will ensure everyone in our state has access to health care," Walker said in a statement.

In response, Democrats said the legislation offered a "false choice" between two low-income groups. That's because it would prevent 83,000 of the state's poorest residents — those below the federal poverty limit of $11,490 per year for single adults — from securing BadgerCare Medicaid benefits for another three months.

Two Democratic senators missed the floor session for health reasons — Kathleen Vinehout of Alma is recovering from an automobile crash that shattered her right arm and Tim Cullen of Janesville is recuperating after open heart surgery. Sen. Fred Risser (D-Madison) was absent.

The ill-tempered Badger is our state animal. It was probably chosen to stand up against the Michigan Wolverine, because I think Badgers are extinct in Wisconsin. We have lots of things Badger around here. Badgercare is Wisconsin’s version of Medicaid. But I’ll forever think of a bleeding vet whenever I hear the name “Badgercare”. LOLOLOL!

The Democrats are suicidal.

This Obamacare mess should put them all out of their misery.

I believe the badger was chosen to represent the miners, predominately lead, in SW WI due to its tunneling attributes. I heard that at one point little Beetown was bigger than Chicago during the heyday of lead mining.

Interesting history. I thought that Mineral Point was the center of lead mining in WI.

My father’s family traces itself back to a place called “Drake’s Branch” in VA, at one time the center of the tobacco trade. I’ve been there. Literally you could miss the place if you blinked. But, at one point (back in the 1600s) a traveler in London told an Englishman that he was from Virginia, and the Englishman replied, “Virginia? Is that anywhere near Drake’s Branch?”

Yes and no. It wasn’t the mining directly but rather because the miners had no homes and chose to dig their homes. There are a few examples left in the state. So the reason is that before Wisconsinites were called cheeseheads, we were referred to as badgers.

"...I think Badgers are extinct in Wisconsin."

I don't think that the badgers that live around here have read that study. ;)

In fact, I know a couple of people who thought the DNR might help with problem badgers, instead they were threatened not to harass the badgers.

Well, I read an article saying that badgers were extinct here. It was probably written by the same people who say we have no wolves and no cougers in Wisconsin. ;^)
