Animal shelters all over the country tend to stay at full capacity. Most are running on a limited budget, and rely heavily on donations. One visit to a shelter, and you can't help but want to help. Some things shelters need are obvious, some are not. Helping may not be as hard as you think.....................

Of all God’s creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the leash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.

With the qualities of cleanliness, affection, patience, dignity, and courage that cats have, how many of us, I ask you, would be capable of becoming cats?

Here is a list from a local shelter....they also have a list of treats, food, etc. that is similar to the list in the post. Some of these are items that you might not think of right off:

Liquid Laundry Soap
Dish Soap
Bleach
Clorox Spray Cleaner
Garbage Bags
Paper Towels
Toilet Paper
Bottle brushes
Copy Machine Paper
Postage Stamps

Remember too: The shelters also purchase items “as needed”...so gift cards to pet supply stores or discount retailers come in handy for a variety of items. Most of these stores have $10-$20 gift cards at the check-out...just purchase and pop it in the mail with a note to use it for whatever they need that day!

VERY easy...and I know that they appreciate it greatly!

Another thing that I just remembered: One of our local shelters has come up with a way for kids to “donate.”

Children cannot work directly with the animals (liability, obviously). SO, the shelter has several recipes for “treats” posted on their website...baked oatmeal/peanut butter goodies, etc. They even provide a free “bone” cookie cutter for all interested families/groups who would like to help out by purchasing the ingredients and baking the little cookies.

If your kids are interested in volunteering, be sure to check with local shelters to see if such an opportunity might be available!

A good time to remember our furry friends.

Sadly, I stopped being a volunteer at my local ASPCA when they began stopping people from adopting dogs. I wanted a beautiful pooch and they did everything to stop me - refusing to let me walk the dog or even take the dog out of his kennel. And I had adopted two dogs from the same shelter. Needless to say, there had been no complaints in my treatment of these animals. Finally, I turned to another volunteer organization and brought home my little Yorkie mix. She’s now in her special seat before a Christmas fire while my local has dogs penned up with no one to take them home!

My dog was from a hoarder’s home. I agree that it starts out well and then gets out of hand. She was in a NYC apartment with 125 other dogs! I’m sure the person had mental issues.

The one thing my local shelter told me that they DON’T need is food. Walmart and other stores donate broken bags to them. They said they have so much they end up throwing it out.

"They said they have so much they end up throwing it out."

Which says they are kinda stupid. Donate the overage to any of the food banks or even homeless shelters. People in need of temporary financial help often have pets that they need to feed. And often, the homeless have pets who are their only companions.

Dogs have OWNERS, cats have STAFF.

Note....otherwise those very animals may end up in the shelter. So in this instance the shelter is still doing their main job......indirectly and by prevention.

My wish on this cold but sunny ‘Hump Day’ is that ‘kill shelters’ become a thing of the past in 2014.

Most cats can be rehabilitated...most women do not want to make the effort. Many men will.

I can understand how the animal hoarder gets to that point. I love animals but I am not mentally unstable (yet).

My daughter and I have made a pact..... if I get to be a dog hoarder (I have 4 now) or if she gets to be a cat hoarder (she has 4 now) we will intervene on each other.

WE both find it very difficult to pass up an animal that needs a home.

What is it about cats and their 'hoomins' shoulders..? At least that preciouslittle bundle is still a kitten...I have an eighteen-pounder (he's actually losing weight" that thinks he's still a kitten.

Off to the chiropractor...
