Thanks. I do have a question about posting pictures. Is it okay to just post a random picture off of the interwebs or do you have to have a way of hosting it yourself?

It depends. Some sites forbid 'hot linking" which is where you just post the link to the image and it renders locally. On a lot of those, instead of the image you want, you get an image that says something about hotlinking not allowed or some other such garbage. I have my own website, so scp the image there. Someone here might be able to give you recommendations of good places to post images that you can link from.

Whenever I refer to a separate link from inside a thread, I prefer to use the TARGET="_NEW" attribute to direct the browser to open a new tab for the link. For example:

Camera 56 - I-94 at Layton Avenue

<A HREF="http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/milwaukee/cam056.htm" TARGET="_NEW">YOUR LINK NAME HERE</a>

Do you know of a definitive list of tags that John's software supports?

For example, I know (from experience) that <IFRAME> and <SPAN> tags are not supported, but would be interested in what tags are, in fact, implemented.

Also, it is a matter of politeness that we shouldn't rip off other folks' bandwidth when pasting images. A lot of sites prevent it, but using your own image hosting or an actual anonymous hosting site is just polite.

The one I like best (better than Imageshack) is:

Imgur -- allows uploading from your computer or re-hosting from a HTML link or pasting it from your clipboard (they also have a neat Firefox add-in and an almost as neat Chrome add in)

I do not have a definitive list of tags supported by FR. LIke you, I know that IFRAME and SPAN, along with <blink> and <marquee> are not supported. I imagine there are quite a few others as well.

John, Would it be convenient for you to provide such a list for future reference?

Thanks for the 2014 update, Ace. I’ve referred HTML challenged Freeps to the Sandbox dozens of times over the years.

Happy New Year ShadowAce!

> I’ve been updating this thread once per year on New Year’s Day.

Sometimes I wish it had more visibility, but I guess the mention in the topic list at the top of the forum page is as good as we can do.

Thank you for providing a much needed and appreciated service!

Some HTML tags that I've recently started using are:

To put in a separator line, use the hr tag. It also implies a following line break br.

I often use this within a blockquote. So, first you enter the start blockquote tag, then the hr tag, then your text, then another hr tag, then the close blockquote tag.

Another tag that I use is the secret code font that lets us "old school" types communicate in a way that the "new school" won't understand. To do this, use the font face='brush script mt'.

This one adds the size sub-parameter to the font tag. The default used above is 3. This one is with size=4.

To put in a separator line, use the hr tag. It also implies a following line break br.

You may want to play around with the ALIGN, WIDTH, and SIZE attributes for some fun effects.

The "Width" attribute (as you can imagine) controls the width of the horizontal rule. It can either be in % or in pixels. For example, if I insert a horizontal rule that is 25% of the screen width, I would use the following: <HR WIDTH="25%">:

Let's say I want to move that line to the left. I would use the ALIGN attribute (acceptable values are LEFT, CENTER, or RIGHT...defaults to "center"). <HR WIDTH="25%" ALIGN="LEFT">:

Or, alternatively, say you want to align it to the right, you would write: <HR WIDTH="25%" ALIGN="RIGHT">:

You can also adjust how thick the line is with the "HEIGHT" attribute (only works in pixels). For example <HR WIDTH="25%" ALIGN="LEFT" SIZE="10">:

Of course, you'll see above that there is a "shadow" effect. If you don't want that, use the "NOSHADE" attribute, as follows: <HR WIDTH="25%" ALIGN="LEFT" SIZE="10" NOSHADE>:

There you go. Fun with horizontal rules (101).
