Feds announce plans for stricter wood stove regulations (EPA again)
Fairbanks Daily News-Miner ^ | January 5, 2014 | Matt Buxton

Posted on 01/07/2014 8:04:38 AM PST by CedarDave

The EPA's much-anticipated wood stove regulations are proposed to go into effect throughout the country in 2015, requiring newly manufactured stoves to cut maximum emissions by more than a third. Those standards would tighten dramatically in 2019 [80 percent in five years].

Wood stoves that already are installed or are for sale are not affected by the regulations, a Friday press release from the EPA stated.

Only a handful of the stoves on the EPA's certified stove list would meet those standards in 2019.

However, the EPA focused primarily on the savings to health costs and money spent on wood in the closing paragraphs of the press release announcing the change.

"When these standards are fully implemented, EPA estimates that for every dollar spent to comply with these standards, the American public will see between $118 and $267 in health benefits," it said. "Consumers will also see a monetary benefit from efficiency improvements in the new wood stoves, which use less wood to heat homes. The total health and economic benefits of the proposed standards are estimated to be at $1.8 (billion) to $2.4 billion annually."

For more information on the proposed standards, which would begin to go into effect in 2015, and for a place to provide comment, visit www2.epa.gov/residential-wood-heaters.

Why don’t we just go back to burning coal?!

Good job EPA!

Whoops... Make that insert, not inset. Missed a stroke cause it’s cold in the computer/bedroom.

They obviously ignore the increased health costs from insufficient heat. Last night it was -13F with 20mph winds. Even with the wood stove and electric heat it was cold upstairs in the house. Hate to have to contend with a “high efficiency” (i.e. lower emissions and lower heating capacity) stove.

I can tell you what that means since we have had the regs in California for many years. IF you put your house up for sale the stove must be on the EPA list or.....removed....or our regs say filled with cement and made inoperable. You cannot sell your house unless that is done.
We have a non epa pellet stove in a real fireplace, not a zero clearance insert, so if we put the house on the market first we will remove the stove then install a damper to turn it back into a working fireplace.
Totally stupid since the pellet stove puts out almost 0 smoke and it would bellow out of the fireplace.

And in CA a stove not meeting regs cannot be sold, given, re-installed, etc. You would think it is a hi-cap magazine.

A stove that met regs when made, may not meet the newer regs, and is forbidden.

“Good thing this doesn’t affect old tire-burning stoves, just wood stoves.”...Or ‘oil drippers’.

Oil drip wood stove has a small stainless steel tube with a flow-control valve that drips used motor oil on the wood fire.

The wood acts like a wick and doesn’t burn up unless it runs out of oil.

I wouldn’t put one in a house, but they work great to heat a garage or pole barn.

EPA proposes restrictions for new Forest Fires in CA, NV, NM, AZ

The federal Environmental Protection Agency has proposed new standards for new Forest Fires that would reduce the maximum amount of fine particulate emissions allowed for new new Forest Fires started in 2014 thru 2019...

The EPA currently certifies new Forest Fires if they produce less than 7.5 grams of fine particulate per hour...

The proposed EPA regulations would reduce that to 4.5 grams per hour for new Forest Fires started after the regulations go into place next year...

The EPA will take public comment on the proposed changes for 90 days. Everyone bring a shovel.

sarcasm obvious.

I was just going to post the same thing. The Lopi stove came with the house I bought and I’m perfectly content with it. I’ve used it to heat the entire house during power outages and would never allow the epa nazis to force me back into the cold.

Yep. We were going to move so uninstalled a perfectly working wood stove....shhhh gave it away to someone we knew who lives in the surrounding mountains so are not under the ‘no burn’ regs. After we took the house off the market due to a family illness, we found the pellet stove on craigslist and installed it. We are lucky that converting our fireplace back is pretty cheap and easy since we are planning on moving in the future and will have to do the whole thing again.

My 25 year old wood stove is very efficient and also burns coal. They would hate that! It also has cast iron “eyes” under the enamel grate top to cook on if the electricity goes out. I turn the electric heat pump back to 60 to come on if the stove goes out but the wood stove makes much better heat. Electric heat will freeze you to death.

Bought my LOPI fireplace insert in early 80’s as a backup heat source for my all electric home. Cost me around $1500 which I thought was kind of pricy at the time. I have recovered that expense many times over and have survived several extended electricity outages in the years since. One of the best decisions I have every made.

I would recommend a kerosene heater.

Kerosene is versatile - it can be used for heating, lighting and cooking.
Kerosene is an oil, not a volatile fuel, so it is much safer to store. It is not explosive.
Kerosene can be stored for many years without significant degradation.
Kerosene is readily available and can be purchased in volume at reasonable prices.
Kerosene is a dense store of energy - 1 gallon contains about 134,000 btus of energy (almost 50% more than a gallon of propane)

Preppers’ PING!!

And bankrupt you at the same time. When I bought the fireplace insert, we were on a coop and paying electricity rates twice what the people across the road on another utility were paying. This was before deregulation. We saved a lot of money burning wood.

I had a LOPI insert in one of my older homes and was very happy with it!

Does anybody have a suggestion for a free standing stove that you could cook on top of in a pinch?

Thanks!
