The irony is that the longer they keep her on life support, the more difficult it will be for an autopsy to determine what, if anything, the hospital did wrong.

As I understand California law in this case, once the body was released to the family, the family can now refuse an autopsy.

The probably can but they'll have a difficult time proving negligence without an autopsy --if litigation against the hospital is something the family intends to pursue.
