Gates is a WASPirant mandarin from Kansas (BA '65 William & Mary, MA '66 U. of Indiana, Ph.D. '74 Georgetown, Russian & Soviet history) and spits on crackers. Moreover, he was running Poppy Bush's campaign to make over Texas A&M into the Yale of the Southwest. (Poppy went to Yale, Skull and Bones, legacy's-legacy frat-boy, and all that ubersnot stuff.)
Gates's latest successor as president of A&M is a Cubana who never even lived in the U.S. until she was appointed. How 'bout that? That's Manor Bush at work, being all broad-gauged and international and all.
