Former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie made it official Wednesday, announcing in a web video that he will challenge Democratic Sen. Mark R. Warner of Virginia this year. Mr. Gillespie said in the video that hes running for Senate because the American Dream is being undermined by policies that move us away from constitutional principles of limited government and personal liberty."
Virginia Republicans, hungry for a victory after being shut out of the top three statewide offices for the first time in more than two decades, are mobilizing quickly to target Mr. Warner, a popular first-term incumbent and former governor of the state with a sizable war chest

Friends,
Business is picking up in Richmond. The General Assembly is back in town, we’re past inauguration day, so we’re down to business.
On Capitol Square, things are off to somewhat of sedate start. Governor McAuliffe has rolled out a few left wing ideas, but nothing seriously off the wall that we haven’t heard before. He continues to remain firmly in favor of Medicaid expansion, and our team remains firmly opposed to Medicaid expansion.
House and Senate Democrats have decided that they want to spend this session talking about abortion and gay marriage and breaking fundraising rules.
Anyone who’s been around Richmond for any length of times knows that legislators can’t raise money during the General Assembly session.
But that didn’t stop Democratic Sen. Don McEachin from trying to get around the rule! He sent out a fundraising email, begging for money to help with the 6th Senate District recount.
We alerted the media, and now Don is giving the money back, and he might be facing a fairly stiff fine, too. Just something to keep in mind when Democrats start talking about how ethical they are!
Governor McAuliffe has also started making appointments, including a plum one for Boyd Marcus.
Let me be the first to offer congratulations to Boyd Marcus on his appointment to the Virginia ABC Board. It’s nice to know the exchange rate for 30 pieces of silver these days is about $122,000 per year plus benefits.
Meanwhile, Republicans are busy governing. On Tuesday, the House caucus rolled out plans to improve our education system by reforming the Standards of Learning, as well as promote the use of “virtual classrooms” to make a better education available to more of our children.
Speaker Howell, Leader Norment, Leader Cox, and our entire team are doing a great job, and I’m proud of them! Thank you, leaders, for focusing on the issues that matter to Virginians.
Speaking of the General Assembly, I know lots of you are wondering about the recount in Senate District 6. As of this writing, Wayne Coleman has announced that he will file for a recount. That process could take a couple of weeks, but it shouldn’t be nearly as involved as the process we just went through with Mark Obenshain’s campaign. We’re recounting only about 20,000 votes, rather than the 2 million cast statewide.
That being said, the margin stands at 9 votes, and our team on the ground is working hard! Democrats are worried — they see the situation on the ground, and they know that we are in very good shape to send Wayne Coleman to the Senate. That’s the reason Del. Lynwood Lewis, the Democrat who holds the 9 vote lead, hasn’t resigned his House seat yet!
We will keep you updated as things go forward, but like I said last week, I’m confident we’re going to send Wayne Coleman to Richmond to be our 21st GOP senator!
We’re still not done with special elections, though. John Whitbeck is running in the 33rd Senate District, and he needs our help! If you can volunteer your time, or donate to the campaign, please click here! John is a great conservative, and he’ll do us proud in Richmond!
The Democrat in this race has an ad on TV right now comparing the Tea Party to rapists. I showed you that ad last week. Not only has she not apologized for it, her campaign manager said Republicans were being too sensitive and manufacturing outrage over it.
Outrage? Yes. Manufactured? No. I imagine she’ll find that out on Tuesday! Please, if you live in the 33rd House District, VOTE ON TUESDAY! Find your polling place here.
Do I really need to remind any Virginia Republican at this point that every vote is critical?
Del. Steve Landes delivered this week’s GOP Address. The topic was Medicaid expansion, and how it remains a very bad idea for the Commonwealth.

I hope the republican nominee wins in November but a former chairman of the RNC doesn’t give me any enthusiasm.
As Je$$e HiJack$on pithed..
Stays out da bushes! (and underlings)
I am from Virginia.
Gillespie is a mega-RINO.
He will lose to Warner, as many conservatives will not vote for him.
I’d prefer that Ken Cuccinelli be the nominee rather than an establishment Republican. We need Republicans in the Senate, but even more we need true conservative Republicans such as Cuccinelli.
While Cuccinelli might take a pass on this (having been burned once by the GOPe and the RNC) I think he would win over Warner. He’d be elected by a Virginia electorate having buyers’ remorse over the election of the despicable Terry McAuliffe and the realities of Obamacare.

Are there other republicans running yet? Who do you think could win?
Fixed it
Since the RINOs refused to vote for Tea Party Conservative Cuccinelli and let him twist in the wind and lose — should conservatives now let their guy twist in the wind and lose? George Allen says the way Republicans can win is for both wings of the party to flap together.
He is better than the last two that have ruled.
Man Cuch would be ideal!
Ken has no intention of running. Ken’s biggest problem was not his record but his lack of financial resources. Without money, McAuliffe could create a caricature of him for the voters which he did.
Regardless of whether folks like EG or not, he will be financially competitive. That will make the race worth watching. If the objective is to get the Senate and get rid of Harry Reid, then right now Gillespie is the only person who can put the seat in play. At worst, it forces Dems to spend money where they didn’t plan on it.
Why should I give a penny to the pro-gay, pro-amnesty RINO Gillespie? Think he would ever defund ObamaCare? Not a chance. And not a PENNY from me. I would rather have a Chris Coons as our clear enemy, then a Mike Castle as a traitor in our ranks.
Exactly. I giant “meh”
PDS’er. Senior Romney Advisor. RINO.
This is the little weenie who declared to the Manchester Union Leader that “the era of small government conservatives is dead”.
I’ll not vote for him and if he comes to my town, I’ll heckle him. I don’t see how these Bushies can live with themselves.
I agree with you and I also gave Cuch $150.00... although I am in Mississippi.
Thank you for doing that. Very much appreciated.
I try to give where I think it will do the most good. I will NEVER give the party another dime... not unless they evolve back to Reaganism. If it were not for corruption and a dim loving gop/e, we would have won that election.
