I remember this story too.
former State Legislator Jane Cease. Cease had served 13 years in the State Legislature when she was appointed to run the States Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). During her tenure, Cease approved spending more than $70 million in cost overruns on a new computer system for the Agency. The system never worked, and the cost ballooned from an original $50 million price tag to $123 million, and was eventually scrapped a total loss for taxpayers. Despite this epic failure, Cease requested and was given another high-paying government job. Under Oregon law, Ms. Ceases 13 years in the Legislature will be credited as though she were paid at her highest three-year government salary during that time.
AND the the 300 or so state cars that were lost when Mill Creek flooded because the company that they hired didn’t get to the state parking lot in time to move all of the cars when they knew several days ahead of time that there would be flooding. They sat at their desks and watched it happen. Then they went out and bought new cars.
