The same phenomenon exists among Jews with Islam in Muslim countries.
Both are likely just self-defense.

And, a theology lecturer I once heard pointed out that most Jews who grow up in Catholic neighborhoods end up being Protestants.
Also, Christianity goes to a different level than Islam does. Christianity tells of a man who was also God. It is made no secret every Christmas season. Islam elevates Mohammed to prophethood and deems Jesus of Nazareth the same. And yet the more “distorted” theology from the Pharisaical Jewish point of view ends up being the most peaceful one. I am forever amused at how Jewish rabbis will claim that Christianity was nothing but bad news for them except in America where it was good news! Is this just a self protective lie to flatter American Christians? Or maybe are they making out the Lord’s blessing through Christians to be less than it really was, even when Christianity carried itself in a dicey manner? I mean every single murder in the Inquisition sucked, make no bones about it, but I think if a Jew had to choose between being there and being in a Marxist regime, the Marxist regime would not win.
