Jailing a black murderer for more than 5 years who killed a white man would be.. Racist.

He took his stand opposite the chinless man, and then, at a signal from the officer, let free a frightful blow, with all the weight of his body behind it, full in the chinless man's mouth. The force of it seemed to knock him clear of the floor. His body was flung across the cell and fetched up against the base of the lavatory seat. For a moment he lay as though stunned, with dark blood oozing from his mouth and nose. A very faint whimpering or squeaking, which seemed unconscious, came out of him. Then he rolled over and raised himself unsteadily on hands and knees. Amid a stream of blood and saliva, two halves of a dental plate fell out of his mouth.
The prisoners sat very still, their hands crossed on their knees. The chinless man climbed back into his place. Down one side of his face the flesh was darkening. His mouth had swollen into a shapless cherry-colored mass with a black hole in the middle of it. From time to time a little blood dripped onto the breast of his overalls. His gray eyes still flitted from face to face, more guiltily than ever, as though he were trying to discover how much the others despised him for his humiliation.

See the girl friend/companion fixing her hair? She watches the assault while fussing with her pony tail, and calmly walks on. Her lackadaisical response is almost as bad as the assault itself.
Before knowing the race of the thug, my thought was that life without parole would be appropriate. Now that I know, I hope even a protected minority will get the appropriate sentence for an evil and violent act.

Obviously the attacker should go down. I don't think he meant to kill the guy, but he did, and that's that - he should do time for it. If you're big and you don't mind punching people, then you have a serious responsibility to be able gauge your punches. Otherwise... you might kill somebody.
On the other hand, just because this guy died doesn't mean he wasn't a petty, arrogant jackass just looking for a punch. Blocking bicycle riders and shooting off your mouth, in the real world, is a very good way to get into a fight. I'm not defending it, I'm stating a really simple fact. And 99.9999% of the time we're talking about a black eye, and not death.
