Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday blasted Russian President Vladimir Putins stunning, willful choice to invade Ukrainian territory and warned of possible sanctions.
You just dont in the 21st century behave in 19th century fashion by invading another country, Kerry said on CBSs Face the Nation, one of several appearances on network interview shows.
Its serious in terms of the modern manner in which countries resolve problems, Kerry said.
Thats not the act of somebody whos strong, Kerry added, saying Putin is acting out of weakness and desperation.
On ABCs This Week, Kerry called Putins move a brazen act of aggression and raised the possibility that allied nations would move to kick Russia out of the Group of 8 in addition to boycotting the G8 summit in Sochi this summer.
Its a 19th century act in the 21st century that really puts into question Russias capacity to be in the G8, Kerry said.
He called on Congress to put together an economic aid package for Ukraine and said the U.S. would be prepared to impose economic sanctions on Russia.
It may well come that we have to engage in that kind of activity, absolutely. I think all options are on the table, he said.
Kerry said specifically Russia is inviting the possibility of very serious repercussions, on trade, on investment, on assets asset freeze, visa bans, on the potential of actions by the global community against this unilateral step.
When Putin sent Russian troops into Georgia in 2008, then-President George W. Bush dispatched warships to the region and distributed humanitarian aid on military aircraft. Asked if Obama was prepared to take similar actions, Kerry replied: The hope of the United States and everyone in the world is not to see this escalate into military confrontation. That does not serve the world well, and I think everybody understands that. The president has all options on the table.
Kerry said if Putin rolled back the military intervention, the U.S. would work with Russia to protect ethnic Russians in Ukraine and stand up to any hooligans, any thuggery there.
Appearing after Kerry on the same program, GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said the House would be very cooperative with the administration on preparing an aid package for Ukraine and potential sanctions on Russia.
First off, we have to accept that the reset with Russia is over, Kinzinger said.
When asked on CBS if a 90-minute call between President Obama and Putin on Saturday had any impact, Kerry said were going to have to wait and see.
Obama made it clear during the call that Russias military intervention is absolutely unacceptable, Kerry said. "President Obama wants to emphasize to the Russians that there are a right set of choices that can still be made to address any concerns they have about Crimea, about their citizens, but you dont choose to invade a country in order to do that," Kerry added.
"There are all kinds of other options still available to Russia. There still are."
If Putin came and kicked Kerry’s behind, I wouldn’t protest.
Yep.
I remember Grenada.
And why did we go into Grenada?
Because the Soviets went into our backyard to build an airfield. And we were right to do that.
So by aiding Georgia and Ukraine, are we not doing the very same thing to the Russians?
What’s good for the goose....
They are all either retarded, homosexual, communist sympathizers, or a combination of the three.
Every time sKerry speaks he reminds me of a chronic dry drunk, someone with organic brain syndrome or a person who never recovered from a stroke.
I'm not kidding...he is not right.
Beside the fact that I think he is a nasty liar and a turd of the first order...I can't stand to listen to him, Period.
“Kerry: Putin now acting out of ‘weakness’ and ‘desperation’”
I see. Putin is rolling tanks and Obama wags his finger. I think I’d take the tank-rolling guy over the finger-wagging guy any day of the week if I was a betting man.
"Enthusiams!"
Go, skerry, GO! Throw your (or some else’s) medals at Putin. skerry is such a complete, absolute asshat.
Putin is acting out of weakness and desperation
Some will actually believe this
I think he meant to say that if Putin just bought some carbon credits he could have Massachusetts.
Quite.
This is the perfect time to sabre-rattle, while the west is at it's weakest point.
If the GOP takes control of Congress, who knows what the future will hold for his pal - The Kenyan.
What an effing disgrace that man is.
You're talking about John Kerry, right??? The word man, in description of John Kerry, is not appropriate.
Right on the mark you are IMO! THAT’s EXACTLY what that lifelong professional political coward is doing, projecting his own “weakness”, and “desperation”.
No, you don’t understand. This is the 21st century, where we blow up wedding parties with drones without congressional approval, then claim the victimized country gave us permission to do it, under a UN mandate that doesn’t exist.
“Kerrys had so much bad cosmetic surgery he now looks like Madame Tussauds version of him.”
He looks like a claymation puppet.
Forget not protesting. I'd be rootin' for Putin.
My protest would be when Vlad stopped.
Strong going into Libya with Nato, the EU and Islamist extremists, but weak when getting the US ambassador to Libya killed.
Strong going into Egypt utilizing the Muslim Brotherhood as their coup forces, but weak when the Egyptian people and military kicked the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist organization out.
Strong going into Syria utilizing Al Qeada as their rebel forces trying to instigate a coup, but so far weak as Assad has survived numerous of their assassination attempts.
Strong going into the Ukraine utilizing neo-nazi thugs who have effectively taken over a popular revolt, but will we be strong or weak eventually.
My guess at this point is a limited tactical nuclear exchange, but that might be too conservative.
Not unlike Harry Reid claiming millions of Obamacare horror stories are all "lies". But as Reagan noted, "facts are stubborn things".
