As Ukraine appears to have all but conceded Crimea to Moscow, ethnic Russians in Kherson, the province just north of the peninsula, are believed to be pushing a secession vote of their own in what a local leader angrily denounced as "treason."
The province has a huge ethnic Russian population, and a vote - particularly with politicking from Russia - could go against Kiev as did last Sundays referendum in Crimea. In addition to a major push from ethnic Russian politicians, the proposal in Kherson could be boosted by the presence of Russian soldiers, pro-Moscow protesters and the kind of propaganda Ukraine accused Moscow of engaging in before the Crimea vote.

So it begins. Moscow has little reason to pay heed to the West and the temptation to weaken Kiev is outright irresistible.

Then Obama, the EU, and the Corporate Media can declare them freedom fighters and recognize their coup junta as the legitimate government.

We will not allow the country to be broken up further, said Mykola Mikolayenko, mayor of the provinces similarly named capital city. If [pro-Russia] city council members want Kherson to join Russia, they better think again. It won't be tolerated. This is treason. Don't worry Mickey, Obama's got your back.

Part and parcel of establishing an Azov shore land corridor between Russia proper and the Crimea. That it would cut Ukraine off from access to an important body of water both economically and strategically and weaken what’s left of the country is probably considered a plus in the Kremlin.

The province has a huge ethnic Russian population,
Likely confusing ethnic Russian with Russian speaking.

Mr. Mayor,
Shoot them! You’ll give Moscow the pretext to move in. If you haven’t noticed, Crimea is already a Russian province.

Moscow would like to pull the “novorossiya” into its orbit. But first it needs to make Crimea work to make joining Moscow an attractive proposition.

Or, alternatively, Putin could fake a crisis, send paramilitary bully boys to intimidate pro-Ukrainians with Russian army regulars (insignia free, of course) to back them up, then stage a rushed plebiscite and immediately move to annex the territory in question.
Hey, it worked last time.

I think Kherson Oblast is Putin's slap in the face of the sissy Obama.
He will never win a referendum in Kherson Oblast like he did in Crimea.
Putin just wants to see Obama pee in his mommie jeans again.
