Obamacare: Taxpayers in the Hole for $1.5 Trillion
The Fiscal Times ^ | Thursday, March 27, 2014 | Edward Morrissey

“What the hell is this, a joke?” Speaker of the House John Boehner said in reaction to news this week that yet another “deadline” in the Affordable Care Act had been unilaterally delayed by the Obama administration. Unfortunately, the answer to that question is yes, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that the joke is on the American taxpayer.

Late Tuesday, the Department of Health and Human Services – which has taken to bragging about “enrollment” numbers that fall millions short of their original goals – announced that the March 31st deadline for open enrollment had become more of a guideline.

For those who could not navigate the troublesome Healthcare.gov web portal in time to meet the cutoff date for accessing approved plans, HHS would now keep the portal open and plans available for purchase, as long as users attested to the fact that they were “in line” for processing before the deadline. Since the announcement came almost a week before the deadline, that either suggests that it typically takes longer than that to complete an application, or that the website is more popular than a Lady Gaga concert.

How, though, will HHS determine who has waited in line because the web portal could not keep up with the demand? The Washington Post’s Amy Goldstein reports that the simple answer is that they won’t bother to try. Consumers will check a blue box in their on-line application to self-attest to their earlier, pre-deadline efforts. “This method will rely on an honor system,” Goldstein writes.

Bankrupting this country is no joke. I just hope we can restore sane government after the collapse!

After another whimsical, illegal change to the law - I want to see someone in Congress stand up and say: "This law has been arbitrarily and randomly changed so many times, so many exemptions given to it - it is not a law, it is a whim. It is contradictory, the changes are unlawful, unpredictable and capricious. Therefore, if they so chose, my constituents should NOT obey it. I will do everything in my power to make sure it is not enforced on them, or penalized for not following it."

Because the honor system has worked out so well for America.......immigration, voter registration, etc. It HAS worked out well for the Dems......all those illegal voters vote Dem. The joke’s on all those of us who love this once great country.

If Bonehead was half as interested in neutering ObaMaoCare as he was in crushing conservatives, this horrid piece of legislation would already be on the ash heap of history.

Yep, it's a joke!

Except there is nothing funny about it.. Stealing 1.7 Trillion out of the pockets of hard working Americans is beneath contempt, it's an impeachable offense!

IMHO, he’s plenty interested in neutering Obamacare. The problem being, there’s not a whole lot he can do, is there?

Soon it will approach what the mac daddies steal from the tax payers for their multi-million dollar vacations, parties and deposits into their off shore accounts.

Ok. I like this article and have no reason to disbelieve it, but it doesn't explain where the 1.5 trillion figure comes into play.

I believe it to be so but where does that number come from?

Thanks. I missed it. I instinctively knew it had something to do with the subsidies, but seeing the hard numbers made my eyes bulge.

“What the hell is this, a joke?” Speaker of the House John Boehner said”

No Mr. Boehner, you are the joke, for letting a President act as a dictator, modifying the law and inventing the law by executive fiat, while you you sit on your hands and pretend the Constitution gave you neither the power or the mandate to stop it.

D’oh! Yep, my slack ass.

seven hundred fifty thousand

So 1.5 trillion to give six million coverage at $750,000 each.

Sounds about right for government spending.
