Well, since I use my machines for music and recording, and they are not hooked up to the internet, I suppose the point is moot.

Private XP not on the internet at all would be safe enough. Use a more modern machine/OS on the internet when possible.

This looks like a great opportunity for Linux. Some of them, like the *buntu’s, make it easy for you to turn your Windows XP into an optionally bootable partition.
