As millions of Americans rush to file their federal income tax returns on Tuesday, few will be thinking that the current tax code is the fairest one of all, according to the latest IBD/TIPP survey.
Just 39% of Americans say today's income tax code which features multiple tax brackets along with myriad deductions and exemptions is the fairest.
As to what sort of tax system would be more fair, the public hasn't made up its mind. Thirty-six percent say a flat tax is the fairest way to collect income taxes, while 19% would prefer a national sales tax.
However, the survey also found that most (54%) think the amount they pay in taxes is "about right." More than a third (39%) say they're taxed too much, and just 3% say they pay too little in federal income taxes.

39% must not pay taxes.
Maybe they got the earned income credit.
And I'm sure that you and Beckie are what Ø considers the lavishly "rich," right?
Yeah, I'm an evil "rich," too. Me and my medium 5-figure income.
39%. That would be all the takers, wouldn’t it?
If only my pension and Soc Sec were taxed like hedge fund “carried interest”
Yeah, they can collect mine in lead.
To be clear, my income is never going to be near the 100% confiscation level, but I clearly see why thoughts like this are damaging to any capitalistic country. There is NO WAY to accumulate wealth through work or enterprise in such a system which stiffles innovation and entrapronurism.
Don't be surprised if it's set at $80k. I've heard this number bandied around. The Communists-in-our-midst want everyone to have only a "subsistence level" income. Seriously.
“Those polled are the ones who dont pay any.”
Bingo!
What would the survey look like if one qualification was used.
That qualification is simple. If you paid Federal Taxes in the past and 2013, you get polled.
I empathize. I don’t know the amount yet, but I’ll find out when I pick up my taxes this afternoon. The biggest checks I write for anything in my life is for taxes.
And I’m not one of “the rich”. But I’m sure the 40% who think the tax system is fair appreciate the money I send in to charge up those EBT cards and Obamaphones while I clip coupons and have a the lowest cell phone plan I can choose.
“I just mailed about 5 grand in checks to 3 different taxing entities...grrrrr.”
Living in Californicator land, we know what you mean.
Besides our Federal income taxes, California income taxes are among the highest.
Our property taxes even with Prop 13 would finance a 14-21 day first class cruise in a mini suite.
Our gasoline taxes are among the highest in the nation, and you need a 4 wheel drive with undercarriage protection to drive safely over our pot holes.
Our local sales tax on everything including the all ready taxed gasoline runs from 8% to what ever.
Then, we have fees on our vehicles, boats, even kayaks with a little electric motor.
The 40% think you don’t pay enough, their EBT cards never last until the end of the month, and their Obamaphone isn’t good enough.
Ditto here. As much as I hate the income tax, I hate property taxes more. You work hard to pay off your mortgage and you still don't own your home since you have to pay rent to the government.
I’d fell a little better if the OTHER family I’m funding via the fed and state govts would send me a thank you note every now and then.
Let's see, something like 49.5% pay 0 or negative income taxes. I assume those think what they pay is "about right." So, that leaves 4.5% that pay income tax that think what they pay is about right. Those are probably the ones paying barely any income tax or think the government is giving them money when they get a refund. Let's do a survey of folks that actually have a positive tax liability and see the results. I'm taxed too much. Even if the dollar value is doable, when I see what it is spent on, any amount I am taxed is obviously too much.
We just paid our property taxes about a month ago, another nice fat check. There are times when I wonder what I’m doing here working like a dog just to support government that disdanes me and welfare people who hate me.
Those who take from others think that the tax system is just. Those who work their a$$es off to pay for the lazy slobs, think it is unfair, unjust, confiscatory, and unworthy of a free society.
Don’t be surprised if it’s set at $80k
Like I said, I will send lead.
I hear the respirators are coming, the ones that tax breathing in the not too distant future. Frankly, that is the way I feel most days.
Last evening when I shut down for the day, turned on the TV and was greated with an ad for the “smart phone”, the one that comes with 500 minutes air time plus 1000 text messages a month. I thought these were for “emergency” situations. First thing went through my mind was why would someone watching TV on a paid for cable connection (this was an upper tier station) need a free phone for and if it were for emergencies, how many would need this level of service? Just paid my cell bill with the gov fees and probably at least one of them is for this “free” service. I know it is a minor thing but when these minor things are aggragated, they add up to real money for someone who works to get it.
The Brown Clown made 12 times what I made and was in the 20% tax bracket and I was in the 25%! Something stinks!
This “progressive” tax system disincentivizes people from working harder to make more money.
It makes no sense (except to a progressive).
