DETROIT (AP) — Pressure was building Wednesday for Michigan lawmakers to commit $350 million to Detroit pensions, a day after the city reached tentative agreements with pension funds and a retiree group to reduce payouts.

Retired police officers and firefighters would see smaller cost-of-living payments but no cut in pension benefits.

Retirees and city employees who qualify for a pension will get a ballot in a few weeks.

Can’t wait for these steps to be taken here in NJ; we’re dying from these costs, and the infrastructure resembles Mogadishu as a result. Christie is bringing it up; he has all the right enemies...

I don't like it much but I'd much rather the GOP had control over the situation than letting Obama handle it. Besides, I want to be able to say that we bailed out Detroit when the next city falls and wants all of America to bail them out.

the precious firemen and cops who generally have huge pensions will suffer the least and I ask WHY?....the little people would like to know...why would people with a lesser pension take a bigger hit?

Now that is mighty nice of them politicians. Most of the time, they just raise taxes and the taxpayers have to pay for these shortfalls and renegotiation of contracts. Mighty nice of them folks.

Let the Democratic Party write a check. Why should the citizens of Michigan bail
out corrupt, democrat run Detroit.

They are, indirectly, but you are still paying for it.

You see Commander Oboingo is fast tracking 100 million in City Demolition Funds for dilapidated housing, which frees 100 mil large on the balance sheet so the city ain't so broke and sort of helps the Pension.

Tangent to this is the State Law ( that is debatable ) that the State is on the hook to Honor all Civic Pensions.

Add to this they are sitting on a huge Budget Surplus, ( like 1 Billion Plus ) their probably is a lot of pressure to throw some money in the pot to make them "whole".

The ungreatful louts would probably never thank the Tea Party Types in the House and Senate and Gov. Snyder for making that Surplus a reality vs the 8 years of Hell Granholm put this State through and once they get the deal they want they will still spend un-kubocko-bucks to destroy these's "R's" in November.

I wonder if they kinda were nudged into a State Deal vs. What Commander Oboingo would have forced on him had they not and also gone for Medicare Expansion vs. a Free Market Approach that lost by ONE VOTE in the Senate a turn coat Republican.

Me Cynical? Nah...

So, $350,000,000 will be spent on Detroit without even one broken street light or even one pothole fixed.

Wow! $350 million and not even a tiny bit of improvement in Detroit.

I respectfully disagree. The state should say “no”, loudly, clearly, and repeatedly. There is no way this is enough money, not even close.

This sets a bad precedent in my view.

“Retired police officers and firefighters would see smaller cost-of-living payments but no cut in pension benefits.”

These union commies don’t mind raising my property taxes by 50%. In turn, I support cutting their pensions by 50%. If they don’t like it, tough doughnuts. Let these union pricks collect their pensions from the rat politicians who signed these union contracts. I was not involved, so go F yourselves.

I read this in the Cleveland Plain Dealer and laughed!! I love it when they feed on their own. We will not see the end of this in Detroit. They will fight to be standing on someone’s head.

“Wow! $350 million and not even a tiny bit of improvement in Detroit.”

That is EXACTLY what is happening in NJ (though while a huge part of the taxes go to pensions, a lot goes to raises for current employees). We have a 2% property tax cap, and teachers get 4% raises; where do you think the rest of their increase comes from? My children have textbooks that are ragged (which I don’t mind for the history books because Obama wasn’t elected yet when the books were printed).
