Four Ways The Ukraine Crisis Could Escalate To Use Of Nuclear Weapons
Forbes ^ | 4/24/2014 | Loren Thompson

Americans haven’t thought much about such scenarios since the Cold War ended, ... However, this year’s crisis over Ukraine is a reminder that Russia remains a nuclear superpower, and that the geopolitical sources of its security concerns have not vanished. In fact, Moscow may have greater reason for worrying today, because it has lost the buffer of allies that insulated it from Western attack during the Cold War, and now finds its capital only a few minutes from the eastern border of Ukraine by jet (less by missile). If you know the history of the region, then it is easy to see why Moscow might fear aggression... Here are four ways that what started out as a local crisis could turn into something much worse...

Not true we haven’t thought about it. Both Bush’s considered the use of nuclear weapons if Iraq were to unleash its chemical or biological weapons.

Russia is not going to allow a hostile regime on its borders. No settlement of the Ukraine situation will occur that does not respect Russian interests.

Its that simple and unlike in the 19th Century - the West lacks the will and the means to “contain” Russia. It does not have to be a zero sum game but right now no one is looking for a way out of the crisis.

Exactly, unfortunately, there are plenty of Russians on here that think Russia is the savior of the world. That taking over countries, is somehow a Christian act. Pigs.

Russian paranoia and fear of an invasion from Western Europe goes back at least as far as Prince Alexander Nevsky and the Teutonic Knights

It will take better diplomacy than the Obama Admin is capable of to assuage that fear

Russia didn’t start this mess. Those who overthrew their legally elected government did. Maybe with our help. Putin is just picking some of the low hanging fruit there. Ukraine ain’t worth starting WW-III for.
