One wonders why this type of vessel couldn't be nuclear-powered.

Wouldn't that take care of the "un-economic" aspect?

Do you know any nuclear-powered transports, let alone merchant boats?
The reason is they aren’t any more economic but actually even more expensive to build and operate than Soviet rolkers with their overpowered gas-turbines. The benefit of nuclear vessel is an ability to operate a prolonged period of time without refueling. The price of boat and fuel itself beats any conventional type.
