Congress Races to Ralph Hall’s (Financial) Aid
Roll Call ^ | May 17, 2014 | Abby Livingston

Rarely are Reps. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and John A. Boehner of Ohio publicly on the same side of a GOP primary campaign. But a band of geographically and ideologically diverse Republicans are rallying behind Texas Rep. Ralph M. Hall, who is in danger of becoming the first incumbent defeated in 2014 later this month.

Hall’s political trouble initially caught many off-guard. Texas House members offered plenty of moral support in the days and weeks after Hall failed to secure the nomination in the March 4 primary. But, according to Hall’s recent fundraising reports, including his pre-runoff report filed May 15, his colleagues have backed up that talk over the past couple of months.

Nearly every Republican member of the Texas delegation, including Sen. John Cornyn, has donated to Hall’s campaign, which brought in $401,000 from April 1 to May 7, including a $100,000 loan from the candidate.

I think you repeated yourself. :-)

In all seriousness: yes, Hall was first elected to this district in 1980 as a Democrat. He switched to the Republican party just before the primary in 2004.

But, he was a Blue Dog Democrat, and part of the coalition in the House to pass conservative economic policies during the Reagan administration. He also voted for most of the articles of impeachment against Clinton, and endorsed Bush in 2000.

He was a conservative Texas Democrat, which were common during that era. But, I think it was time for him to retire.

Yes, he was a decent representative as far as Congress-critters go, but he was tired and lacked the energy to fight the Boehner GOPe in the House and would have supported them when needed. His replacement has the needed energy and motivation to fight.

Rep. Hall was a staunch conservative, reflective of the East Texas Democrat that dominated Texas for decades. When my DILs father was working in the Middle East and his compound was hit, his office worked to find out his status when we could not contact him, finally letting us know he was safe. You would see him driving his district, behind the wheel, no possie of aids, etc.

What beat him was his age. Just time for him to retire.

I agree. He retires with honor. And he leaves his district in good constitutional conservative hands.
