You have to understand, Texas is on the threshold of going very Blue. Despite low turnout elections, all general elections beginning in 2016 or 2020 will be mostly Blue candidates.
Already very Blue El Paso, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, and Houston will rule the state in the very near future. You only have to look to California in the late 70's to late 80's to understand how this will happen here.

Unfortunately I do understand. I moved to the Houston suburbs and have watched our once very conservative Republican group - to which I no longer belong - move to strong support of the Chamber of Commerce and way too much of the “why can’t we all just get along” mentality.
Just breaks my heart.

Texas has just over 13.6 million registered voters. At some point when those urban
areas have enough democrat voters they will impact statewide elections for sure.
You can see that impact in the Austin/San Antonio areas today.
