tanding on his presidential limousine, Lyndon Johnson, campaigning in Providence, R.I., in September 1964, bellowed through a bullhorn: Were in favor of a lot of things and were against mighty few. This was a synopsis of what he had said four months earlier.
Fifty years ago this Thursday, at the University of Michigan, Johnson had proposed legislating into existence a Great Society. It would end poverty and racial injustice, but that is just the beginning. It would rebuild the entire urban United States while fending off boredom and restlessness, slaking the hunger for community and enhancing the meaning of our lives all by assembling the best thought and the broadest knowledge.

There will never be enough money to end the war on poverty and there will never be enough armed federal, state, and local LEOs to end the War on Drugs.
>> the hunger for community
That’s socialist code for abdicate responsibility and make government your daddy.
‘zackly.
Of course. That kind of paternalistic government appeals to lazy and greedy freeloaders.
‘Lazy and greedy freeloaders’ defines a massive element in America these days.
Lyndon Baines Johnson is the WORST president America ever had.
B. Hussein is a close second and may overtake Johnson someday, but the social, economic and moral fallout from the LBJ years still haunt us today.
end poverty and racial injustice Nope, it didnt do that
rebuild the entire urban United States Nope, that didnt happen
fend off boredom and restlessness, Nope, no progress there
slake the hunger for community Nope
enhance the meaning of our lives Nope
No program in the history of our country has been as big a failure as LBJs Great Society...
yet.
Itll take a few more years (assuming we last that long) for Obamas Fundamental Transformation to equal it.
Jeb Bush says he wants to govern like LBJ. His brother was in that mold , too.
I once asked Tom Moorer why Lyndon Johnson did not go to Congress to get a formal declaration of war for the Vietnam “police action.” He growled back: “Because he thought it would interfere with his great society.” So the choice was between being victorious for the people whom we later betrayed on the one hand and destroying the American family and morality on the other hand.
LBJ’s stated goal for the Great Society was “to keep the n*****s voting for us until the end of time.”
In that he has succeeded beyond his wildest imagination.
My parents and other family-mostly ranchers-said he was already deep into corruption and the mob when he was a senator, and I believe it-and it only got worse-I’d campaign harder than I ever have for someone who would take a huge ax to all his great society programs...
He gave us a welfare system that has turned the urban poor into the urban Roman mob, killed ambition and the desire for success through legitimate employment in lower income families-and that has persisted for three generations now, it is responsible for increasing numbers of children having no fathers involved in their upbringing and the resulting crime and lack of a work ethic.
LBJ actually had total contempt for Blacks and Latinos-he used the words “n***ers” and “meskins” in private all the time.
His foolish actions and courting of the left put us in a no-win situation in Viet Nam-Hey, hey LBJ, how many kids did you kill today?
We should burn a truckload of EBT cards every year in his memory...
If that is so, Jeb Bush is even more a legend in his own mind than I had thought...
I tend to agree.
But Hussein is doing his best to equal the LBJ disaster.
“Lyndon Baines Johnson is the WORST president America ever had.”
While Johnson, Carter, and zero all deserve a special place in the idiot hall of fame, a hundred years from now, clintoon will have passed them all. While clintoon was better at hiding his destruction, his destruction of America was much more far reaching and significant. When the second American Civil War begins, the roots will be clearly traced back to the eight years of clintoon.
I guess 20 trillion dollars of wealth redistribution just wasn't enough.
Do you have the source of that quote? It’d be fun to have.
I think the almost exact quote was that LBJ “would have the n*****s voting Democrat for the next 100 (sometimes I hear 200) years.” Also a terrible part of LBJ’s legacy is the Immigration Act of 1965. Import the Third World, become the Third World.
Doesn’t matter. He got the democrats 30 more years of holding the congress, and that was the point.
There was a comedian that did a pretty good LBJ, one of his routines was pretty funny.
One liner went like this.......Just when I learned to say knee-gu-row, they went and changed it to Black.
Sorry I don't remember the comedian's name.
