Earlier this week, the U.S. arm of a major global insurance company backed away from an unprecedented lawsuit against Chicago and its suburbs for failing to prepare for heavy rains and associated flooding it claimed were fueled by global warming. While legal experts said the case was a longshot, its withdrawal didn't alter the message it contained for governments: prepare now for climate change or pay the price.

Umm, it's corruption in Chicago - same reason pot holes aren't fixed. Preparing for flooding caused by rain isn't new... Has NOTHING to do with 'global warming'. And how come the reporter didn't tell us the name of the 'major' insurance company. This story feels bogus... pushing an agenda based on thin air... and unicorn logic.

"... To insurance companies, there’s no doubt that climate change is here: They are beginning to file lawsuits against small towns and cities who they say haven’t prepared for the floods and storms that will cost the companies billions in payments."

Noah built his ark in faith, so I suppose that insurance companies can raise their insurance rates in faith. /sarc

Hasn’t the Fed forced the insurance companies to revise the flood standards?

Yeah they raised awareness alright. Awareness that people shoudn’t buy insurance from an insurance company looking for ways to not pay claims.

If you read the article, you’ll see the company is Farmer’s.

No reason in the world why that fact could not have been included in the first paragraph. Jourinalism is truly becoming a lost art.

A P&C insurer trying to drive a hard market without unilaterally raising their rates and losing to the competition.

I've been doing a lot of reading lately about alleged human-caused global warming/climate change. It's pure political argle-bargle with absolutely no scientific basis. The books have been cooked. It 's all part of the U.N.'s Agenda 21 plan to de-industrialize the West and establish global socialist government.

The insurance companies see an opportunity to use AGW scare tactics to decrease their liability exposure. It's pretty cynical.

If they go ahead with this I hope someone takes them to court and makes them prove that CO2 actually causes global warming. It doesn't and they can't provide evidence to show it does. Read "The Deliberate Corruption of Climate Science" by Dr. Tim Ball.

Putting a picture in a frame inside of a picture inside of a frame does not insulate the inner picture from scrutiny.

The assumption that there is a such thing as true AGW is so arrogant, egocentric, by us single grain of sand on a ten mile white sands beach is deserving of ridicule and punishment.

Just from looking at the land in Washington state I never would have suspected the land was ripe for mudslides. Heavy tree growth would stabilize the soil, IMO. Not knowing about the composition of the clay layered soil was the mistake.

Lawsuits by insurance companies against local governments: fake. They’re friendly lawsuits between socialist entities.

The same tactic has been used by local governments and NGOs “against” the EPA many times. Both sides want more regulations against American liberties. One pretends to be a victim forced into it and “settles” without any loss.

We need new leadership in all political parties and business (now nearly all government-linked). They’re crooks, folks.

Good point. Knowing the total “lay” of the land could be a big plus.

The article does say that Farmer's withdrew the suit, saying they just wanted to "raise awareness".

Later in the article:

Although Farmers' dropped its case against Chicago and the surrounding communities, it does little to alter the prospects for similar lawsuits in the coming years, according to Gerrard. This is especially true for private companies that lack legal protections which provide government agencies immunity from liability for discretionary decisions such as delaying infrastructure upgrades due to budget constraints.

It's just the opening gambit as in a chess game.
