President Obamas instincts about Iraq and Syria have been sound from the beginning: Greater U.S. engagement probably cannot make things better but certainly can make them worse, both for the people of the region and for our national interests.
Obamas only mistake was to buy, for a time, the notion that Bushs troop surge had miraculously healed ancient divisions and made the dream of a pluralist democracy still possible.
There are aspects of Obamas foreign policy that I question. His heavy reliance on drone strikes may create as many terrorists as it eliminates. He should have realized that the National Security Agencys bulk collection of electronic communications, if revealed, would complicate relations with our allies. His announced pivot toward Asia is yet to be realized.
But I can find no reason to fault Obamas unwillingness to intervene in Iraq and Syria. His view is supported by most Americans, according to polls. Anyone who disagrees should spell out just what they would like the president to do.

Obama’s an idiot.
This is total nonsense. We are to believe that it’s Bush’s fault that Obama was in such a hurry to withdraw. Bush himself warned against it. Just asinine.
Keep howling at the moon, ‘bots.
UNMITIGATED BS!!! FROM THE MOUTHS OF FOOLS!!!
We’ve known for years that if Barack Obama slaughtered a troop of girl scouts on the White House lawn and then took a dump on the Oval Office desk the Washington Post would laud him for his forthright, insightful leadership.
Eugene Robinson, pictured here on the right, pays homage to his hero B. Hussein Obama (boot pictured on the left).
Classic objectivity from the partisan, E Robinson.
Maybe we could reclassify his work as satire.
The Middle East is like a pile of sh*t in your clogged toilet. Unless you intend to get down and dirty with plumbing, just flushing your toilet in some wise pattern will only make the sh*t to overflow in all directions.
Isn’t the Washington Post the newpaper bought by the far left BEZOS who owns Amazon?
I would expect no better from Eugene Robinson. In 2008, the Iraqi foreign jihadis had been slaughtered, the country was at peace, a new government had been elected, and we had troops on hand sufficient to quell any foreign invasions. In 2014 none of that is true. What, in all this, did 0bama get “right”?
Black journalist who got a Pulitzer Prize for writing articles on Obama....
(need I say more?)
No, Obama lovers—especially Blacks-—will never be upset about Obama.
lol
Looking for a complimentary article on Obama by Eugene Robinson is like shooting fish in a barrel. Impossible to miss.
“...a deal was eventually reached under which Assad has surrendered all but a tiny fraction of his chemical weapons to international control.”
Come on, did this turn-over actually ever occur?
Last I heard they were guessing that it was like 4% that had been turned over.
Okay, Odingo resign.
Obama got none of it right, in fact he destroyed what was gotten right and squandered the opportunity to help Iraq. WE are now facing the fulfillment of 4th War in Daniel prophecy...
Thank you, that was the article I was remembering. Sort of explains the bias of the WA Post.
I thought Eugene was the Wash Post’s nod to in-house diversity after they rid themselves of the Plagiarists and Make-it Up AS You Go Along Affirmative Action People.
