Guinea Ebola Riots Wound Dozens
Conakry - Clashes between protesters and security forces in a Guinean city at the epicentre of the west African Ebola outbreak have left at least 55 wounded, the local government said on Saturday.
A curfew was imposed in N'Zerekore, Guinea's second-largest city, after two days of protests on Thursday and Friday by market stall holders against a team of health workers sent, without notice, to spray their market with disinfectant.
Regional governor Lancei Conde said at least 27 law enforcement officers forces were among the wounded.
"In N'zerekore and elsewhere, there are two camps - those who believe in the existence of Ebola and those who think that the epidemic is imported. Investigations are ongoing," he said.
City prefect Aboubacar M'bop Camara said protesters had "attacked the regional hospital's ambulance, UNICEF vehicles, the vehicle of the cardiologist at the regional hospital (and) the car of a private individual".
Former rebels
Local lawmaker Honomou Kourouma blamed the violence on former rebels, without specifying which groups he was referring to.
"If the turmoil has caused enormous damage, it is due to the presence of suspicious troops populating the city," he told AFP.
"It's no secret that former rebels are in N'zerekore. They are there in plain sight of everyone. They represent a threat to the city, the country and the region," he said.
The population of N'zerekore has more than doubled to 300 000 in the last two decades, due largely to refugees escaping civil wars in neighbouring Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
Kourouma's claim was dismissed by Camara, who nevertheless admitted that "security forces were targeted by gunfire".
More than 1 500 people had been confirmed dead from Ebola in four countries - Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Nigeria, with Senegal announcing its first case on Friday.
In Guinea, where the virus emerged at the start of the year, 430 people have died.

Is this what passes for logic in the minds of the Guinea rioters, or just in the mind of the journalist? The epidemic could be both real and imported (originate elsewhere).

What exactly is this disinfectant? I thought nothing could kill it. If so, then what’s the sense in spraying? I wondered this when we saw all those pictures of medical personnel spraying equipment.
I would suspect chlorine bleach would kill the Ebola virus. The Catch 21 is that chlorine bleach will kill the virus outside ones body but it will kill the body if used inside the body.
I bet you can’t say “N’zerekore” and chew gum at the same time.
In fact. If properly combined with other household substances, bleach can also sanitize against MRSA. The mixture is too dangerous to mention here, but can be found with a little research.
I was thinking similar things. And in either case, it still needs to be dealt with, and quarantined.
I was reading some info on the level 4 protocols, and they use frequent washing of the protective gloves in bleach as they work on various samples containing Ebola, so Bleach must have some effect.
They also dress in space suit type outfits with injected air to breathe rather than depending on masks, and filtration devices, and several layers of gloves that are taped around the edges to the suit to create a sealed system.
I don’t think the hospital protocols are near as strict though, which may be why some health care workers have become infected.
That tells us even the best gloves won't keep it out. Several gloves is to give them extra barriers. A certain percent get past glove #1, then a percent of that gets past glove #2, and crossing your fingers that some smaller portion can only get through glove #3 and hopefully before it finds it's way through the last glove you've finished your task and are back in the decontamination room.
Well it’s a hint for sure, but since they are also working with tools, it’s possible that they need the extra barriers in case of accidental penetration.
