U.S. military forces attacked the extremist al-Shabab network in Somalia Monday, the Pentagon said, and a witness described ground-shaking explosions in a strike that reportedly targeted the groups leader.
Al-Shabab had attacked the upscale Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, killing at least 67 people a year ago this month and the U.S. had targeted planners of the bloody assault. There was no immediate comment from al-Shabab and U.S. commanders were waiting to determine the attacks outcome.
U.S. military forces conducted an operation in Somalia today against the al-Shabaab network. We are assessing the results of the operation and will provide additional information as and when appropriate, said Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Adm. John Kirby.
After the U.S. strike Monday night in a forest south of Mogadishu, masked Islamic militants in the area arrested dozens of residents they suspected of spying for the U.S. and searched nearby homes, a resident said.
Mass arrests just started, everyone is being detained, said Mohamed Ali, who lives in Sablale district. They even searched nearby jungles and stopped the nomads transporting milk and grass to the towns for questioning.
A senior Somali intelligence official said a U.S. drone targeted al-Shabab leader Ahmed Abdi Godane as he left a meeting of the groups top leaders. Godane, also known as Mukhtar Abu Zubeyr, is the groups spiritual leader under whose direction the Somali militants forged an alliance with al-Qaida.

Is a play on islam’s gorilla tactics with American Gorilla Tactics. In and gone is good!
Thank You Soldiers ... This One is for You ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77v_Xzbn66Y
Targeted airstrikes on Hamas leaders didn’t stop the missile strikes into Israel and Obama’s targeted strikes from Bin-Laden to the terror leader in Somalia won’t stop terrorism.
Vietnam style tactics do not win wars.....
Not an Aspirin factory I hope.
So, øbama finally found some islamists he can rough-up to deflect from his ISIS bro’s.
Apparently hussein doesnt know this is going on.
So terrorist officers are off the table?
A good start, but this pin prick won’t end the threat to the US homeland. Al-Shabab attacked the upscale Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya, killing at least 67 people a year ago. The largest Somali community community outside Somalia is in Minneapolis and a number of young Somalis from the Twin Cities have been recruited by Al-Shabab for terrorist training in Somalia. Minneapolis is home to the largest mall in the US, the Mall of America. Connect the dots.
Nothing wrong with it but lets face it, killing terrorist leaders in the Obama and Netanyahu examples has a public relations smell to it.
Killing leaders doesn’t kill terrorism, it makes people feel better about the situation.....
The military is hunting terrorists, they were before Obama, during Obama, and will be when he is replaced in a couple of years.
Which drives home the notion that the only difference between the D’s and R’s are the words coming out of their mouths while the half fast war on terrorism drags on Vietnam-style.
So you are just whining and really have nothing to say relevant to this.
The attack was good, and it was sound, your opposing it is silly.
Not opposing it, just noting that it was a joke that isn’t going to stop terrorists, destroying their bases completely works.
Berlin and Tokyo in 1945 were examples of how you deal with your enemy.
They didn’t target Hitler, Tojo or Goring, they waged a total war invading the enemies territory and or bombing its cities into rubble.
So you used this good news to as an excuse for some childish meaningless complaining, and some of it quite strange.
To explain the difference between a winning strategy like Patton’s “give them hell all the time” for WW II and the pinprick strategy of Republicans and Democrats in times since that are doomed to fail with negative consequences for us all like more terrorist attacks.
You opposed our Phoenix program, and you oppose having killed German and Japanese generals in WWII, and this finding and killing a terrorist leader has you angry.
Thanks for your perspective.
“Hold them by the nose, kick them in the ass, give them hell all the time and go through them like crap through a goose”-George S. Patton
These pin prick targeted attacks on terrorist leaders bear no resemblance to that.
What continent do you want to invade, and why did you not want to kill that guy we found in Somalia?
Why did you oppose Phoenix, why do you oppose killing military leaders when we can.
I don’t recall Patton opposing hunting down Yamamoto, and killing him.
