Is Canada Now More American than America?
National Review ^ | 09/05/2014 | John Fund

The merger of U.S. hamburger giant Burger King with Tim Hortons, Canada’s favorite coffee shop, will create the world’s third largest fast-food company, with a total of 18,000 restaurants in over 100 countries. It is also a piercing wake-up call for the U.S., because the new company will make its global headquarters in Canada’s province of Ontario. That underscores what savvy businesses everywhere have learned — the U.S. is an increasingly less attractive place to do business. “Canada has quietly and politely become, well, more American than America,” says columnist Stephen Green.

Since 2003, more than 35 major U.S. companies have moved their headquarters and reincorporated overseas. Rather than rail against such “inversions,” as President Obama does, or call for an economic boycott, as Ohio’s Democratic senator Sherrod Brown does, we should figure out what is driving U.S. companies offshore. Here’s a clue: The U.S. now has the highest corporate tax rate of any industrialized country, and the Wall Street Journal reports that the Obama administration is “even now looking for ways it can unilaterally raise corporate taxes without going to Congress.”

Canada has long been our more socialist and, consequently, our poorer neighbor to the north. But that has changed over the last two decades. Starting in 1995, Canada has drawn back from a public-debt precipice, restrained government spending, and dramatically overhauled its tax system. Next year it will also begin unilaterally reducing tariffs on thousands of manufactured goods — recognizing that free trade makes for wealthier consumers and a more prosperous society.

The results have been dramatic. This year, Canada has a higher per capita household income than the U.S., an unheard-of development that no one saw coming.

“But Canada proves that a country can climb out of a deep fiscal hole within a remarkably small number of years and build a prosperous society even while it retains large welfare-state programs.”

This is a dishonest quote used by covert Leftists. For starters, Canada has about 34 million people, and the US has about 320 million people; our welfare system is at least 10 times more crippling than Canada’s, and considering that welfare programs alone take up much more than 50% of our budget, we MUST eliminate welfare before we can proceed, both in a fiscal and moral sense. 100% of the New Deal must be repealed!

Only if the Liberals are kept as a 3rd party.

I (for some reason) read MacLean’s magazine, and my goodness if you think the press here is full of dingbat leftists, then these people are full-on Marxists. They see Harper is the most evil SOB to ever be PM and are just waiting for Trudeau to take his “rightful” place as their version of Obama. They even got their own version of John Stewart whose only job is to make Harper out to be an idiot because being better of economically than the U.S. obviously is obviously the mark of stupidity.

They really dont realize how good they got it compared to us down here. If they keep their heads and dont put Marxists in control, then they will have some smooth sailing for the next 5 years.

For all practical purposes and intent, all Muslims are liberals. They have the exact same broad goals of socialism and the destruction of Christians, Jews, and America; American liberals and Muslims disagree on very few issues, other than perhaps on fornication and drugs.

This has been my thoughts all along and it is always refreshing to encounter some one who has not lost his or her straight thinking abilities, something most of our politicians have lost or discarded some time ago. .

Frequently our society wonders and questions what attracts people to radical (i)slam? The next question one should pose and may bring us closer to a somewhat unexpected answer is, what is the common denominator for radical (i)slam and radical socialism, as it is currently pushed and forced on to the public in various shapes, forms and stages. If we find an answer for one it may provide us with a solution for both.

Once someone with some common sense explores the issue, unless they are mentally challenged the light may go on and they may finally realize that both have so much in common that it is uncanny; with the level of violence being the only difference, at least for now. Someone should have told Stalin, as during his regime he killed more people than you want to remember. This is one of the outgrowths of socialism when it is taken to the nth degree and a dictator takes over. Unfortunately most humans don’t know what a happy medium is, including politicians along with the EPA, just to mention “One” governmental agency. Once you empower them to regulate a river, they will not give up or be happy until they regulate the water going down your toilet.

The goal of either one is to control the largest number of humans by imposing the will of a relatively few by any means necessary and possible. May this be by cheating, threatening, falsifying information, intimidation, distorting facts, lying, stealing, controlling opinions, violence and even killing.

In other words in order to achieve their goal either one will resort to ways and means which eventually will bring out the worst in human nature and in the long run invariably leads to some form of calamity and failure, and those results are backed up over and over by historical facts. Will it ever sink in and humans learn?

Is it finally safe to state on this forum that the US is a socialist country and that no other foreign country is a greater enemy to us then we are to ourselves? ...we are the ones we were afraid of..

That includes China. Oh we may well fight them but it will be one communist country fighting another one.

All of the pleas to keep American jobs here, keep our oil here, bar imports, etc. are just crutches of the typical communist regime. They all are useful in diverting us from insisting on being free men.

Now Canada is held up as a role model...jeeesh. Must explain why we can’t let them connect their pipes.

Canada also does not have large, growing numbers of minorities (blacks and Hispanics) who drag down the average GDP. I certainly congratulate Canada for its economic reforms and wish we’d do the same. But keep in mind demographics make a huge difference as well.

Given the mindset of our federal government, I’m guessing that Iran is now more American than the US.

I've heard that too. But as far as differences, after visiting Canada a number of times in the past twenty-five years, you can go to many places there and think you're in the States. Much of Canada is very similar to the upper Midwest outside the large cities.

And as far as "unfriendly" Canadians, on separate visits I've had my ears yakked off by very friendly Canadians. The last time in Alberta one guy at a Canadian national monument conducted a friendly monologue for half an hour to my wife and me.

"socialist country"

I'll demur slightly while agreeing that we're headed down the wrong path. Unless being slightly socialist makes us a socialist country, then we're still more of a free-market country.

Recognizing that the level of money the fed. gov. takes from its citizens, we are too socialist by about 20%. The fed gov. should only be taking about 10% to run the necessary services. Over that is socialist territory. But yes, socialism is on the rise.
