Germans want more independence from the United States in security and diplomacy affairs, according to a major survey released on Wednesday, which showed negative attitudes towards the USA have hardened.
The study from the German Marshall Fund (GMF) think-tank showed for the first time in the history of the survey that a majority of Germans wanted their country to take a more independent approach from the United States in security and diplomacy.
According to the 13th Transatlantic Trends survey, 57 percent opted for a more independent approach, up from 17 percent in 2013.
Just 19 percent of Germans said they wanted to have a closer relationship with the United States, compared to 34 percent of Americans who wanted their country to get cozier with Germany.

They’ve been “Obamasized”.
Do we have a relationship with any country or government that hasn’t been made worse by Obama?
Well - I guess ISIS would be an exception.
can anyone blame them?
I’ll bet it has more to do with the color gold than the color black actually.
53000 troops in Germany...bring em home then.
You mean in a world where 9 is now called a “broad” coalition? Not 37. Nine.
Everytime that little tidbit of how much we still infuse into their economy, the attitudes change as well.
I have known this my entire life as my dad married my mother while he was part of Occupation Forces. We have experienced this same crap year after year after year . . . . Just more of the leftie bunch doing their serial whining, just like the socialists in France. We were there to be kicked out in ‘66.
Not sure how seriously to take this - after all the Germans’ whining about being spied upon - to find out they returned the favor and have been spying on US!
That being said, I love Germany as a country. Been there several times - it’s beautiful.
The Bundeswehr would love that.
We’ll never know unless Janeane challenges them on it. But she’s silent instead.
You will lose that bet. It is Obama they dislike, not the USA
My brother, who works for one of the big computer manufacturers, told me just yesterday that they lost an extremely large contract with a large German manufacturer because of the anti-American political climate over there right now.
Thanks, Uncle Barack. Way to go.
They translate it very quickly into breaking away from the USA, though.
especially when he steals their gold.
The German Marshall Fund - kind of ironic .....
The U.S. has not stolen any German gold. If you believe otherwise, could you please provide a reputable source that substantiates your belief?
If I asked you to keep my money in your safe for a while and you did and then if I asked you to give it back to me some time later, and you declined to do so...what would that be called if not theft? They wanted it back. We said no. They didn’t get their gold. We still have it. You can try to cover that up with whatever excuses you want but I think it’s pretty f***ing clear what happened.
The U.S. is in the process of returning Germany’s gold. And there’s no need to use filthy language when responding to me.
"There are these rumours that either the gold in New York is no longer there or you do not have unrestricted access to it.Why have you not called in auditors or other externals to oversee the transfers in response to such rumours?
"It astounds me that Handelsblatt pays any attention to such absurd rumours. I was in New York myself in June 2012 with the colleagues responsible for managing the gold reserves and saw for myself how our money is stored in the vault there. The Americans have never stonewalled or hindered us in any way. On the contrary, their cooperation has been most constructive in every respect. Our internal audit team was present last year during the on-site removal of gold bars and closely monitored everything. The smelting process is also being monitored by independent experts."
