[history]
The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits rose less than expected last week, suggesting an acceleration in job growth in September.
Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 293,000 for the week ended Sept.20, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

Fun with numbers Thursday. Exactly. Folks who work w/ numbers are noting Durable Orders --down 18.2% after last months's +22.56%. Right after the news stocks tanked.

Around here, a bit south of Cleveland, I can see signs of a changed job market. People who want to work seem to have found jobs, the stores, restaurants etc show a lot of "help wanted signs" and an increased percentage of jobs are being filled by residents of Cleveland's east side. Conclusion....people who want to are working.
The problem is that with a few exceptions, the jobs pay under $10 an hour and are part time. It seems that a pretty high caliber of workers is filling those jobs.
The unemployment number might be correct, but it doesn't reflect the job market workers face.
Just my observation.

what is the labor participation rate? I'll put money on there being a BIG drop in about a month, and then a big increase the month after that.

So Reuters, what is the labor participation rate? Exactly the right question to ask!! Here's the dirty little secret that the lamestream media and the White Hut refuse to admit: The Labor Participation Rate continues to fall.
Our economy is not "recovering" in any sense of the word.

From what I've read most recent job growth has been in the 'hamburger flipper' area that the media dishonestly claimed so characterized Reagan's recovery.
But the 6.1 number is bogus. There is a huge number of working age people who aren't participating in the job market, either having settled for welfare or quit for lack of opportunity.

Meh, Foxbiz just copies the Reuters talking points. They don’t spend anytime on half of these reports.

You know, of course, the number will be “revised” over the next couple of weeks, and the reporting will “unexpectedly” reflect a much greater number than first reported.

What I'm seeing is people being able to pick up 20 or so hours a week when so of their benefits run out. If people with less than 28 or so hours a week were not counted as either employed or unemployed, that might create a higher, more honest number.
I wonder what percentage of the population is in limbo...enough hours to bring in some cash, but not enough hours to call what they do a full-time job.

The problem with that is they won't stay satisfied with that for very long.
And the problem with that is if this economy does not re-establish some sort of way to start climbing the ladder again, they'll turn their energies towards getting the minimum wage hiked and forming unions.

When the Soviets were marching on the Reichstag, there were still Nazis crazy enough to believe that Germany could still win the war.
I wonder what propaganda pieces like this will be cranking out when people are rioting and looting and the government is trying to enforce martial law across the whole US.
