I expected that in all areas of life, understanding came before obedience.

Which is not to say that it isn't understandable. Like catalysts in a series of chemical reactions, there are elements only understandable through the Hebrew, and then one must obey them in full to come to understanding. At that point, it becomes mind-blowing.

"He prepared it, indeed, He searched it out. And to man He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.’”
Job 28:28

God wants us to obey by faith and submission.
