Colorado Governor Says Voters Were 'Reckless' to Legalize Marijuana

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper says his state's voters were "reckless" for voting to become the first state to legalize marijuana for recreational use. The Democrat's statement came during a debate Monday with his Republican opponent, Bob Beauprez, just four weeks before voters head to the polls for the state's hotly contested gubernatorial election.

In 2012, more than 55 percent of voters in Colorado supported Amendment 64, which legalized marijuana for recreational use. The amendment aimed to regulate marijuana in roughly the same way alcohol is regulated.

Be it cannabis, hops, agave, or any other plant — it ain’t the vegetation that’s bad. No thing is either good or evil unto itself. Even things crafted expressly for vile purpose are not of themselves evil, though they may be crude and vulgar. No, it is solely the human will that puts a thing to good or vile use, for only a willful actor has the capacity to intentionally put a thing to use for good or ill. One man can take a hickory limb, and use it to win the World Series. Another man can use the same stick to beat your brains out. Neither use condemns or celebrates the hickory tree; rather they both speak of the one who wields the hickory.

Hickory is merely a hardwood of a specific sort.
Cannabis is merely a plant of a specific sort.
An AK-47 is merely a rifle of a specific sort.
Sour mash whisky is merely a drink of a specific sort.

The proper or improper use of these things by beings possessed of self-will is all that can be rightly regarded as good or evil.

As the prophet Eric Clapton hath said, “It’s in the way that you use it.”

Or, to quote another wise elder gentleman of some repute:
“Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards; there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.”
— Ben Franklin, letter to André Morellet, 1779

The smell is bad, think of living right next door to the stench. Medical Marijuana in Michigan, my neighbor does it and approximately 6 others on the same block. It is nearly impossible to walk through the neighborhood anymore without being lamblasted by the stench.

“It was a constitutional amendment...there was nothing to sign into law.”

Got it.. thanks for the clarification.

A surefire way to get unelected is to tell 55% of the state's voters they did something stupid. It will work every time.

So never mind telling Obamavoters how horrible their double decision was...

But you were a tourist just passing through, and brought your own money. Democrats want stoners with EBT welfare cards because they vote and are easily controlled.

So what if the city is converted to a slum, if you get to live in a gated community.

Besides, for a democrat, lying to a stoner is so much easier.

When was the last time you saw two stoners get off the couch to go to a bar?

I considered this when I made the post. The point I wanted to make is that you can basically take any verse and apply it to either side of an argument. You pretty much summed it up, the reply was to someone who seemed to imply that marijuana is evil. Indeed it is man who does evil. Marijuana itself isn’t evil or as bad for abusers as many drugs, legal substances, and prescription drugs are. Although I have seen marijuana users throw their lives away, I have seen many also helped by it.

Take for example a chemotherapy patient who is up all night throwing up not able to eat anything after a treatment earlier that day. Marijuana can help them. They aren’t using it for recreation, but to ease their pain.

The Bible cherry picking just seems wrong to me, I’m not sure why. But beyond that, I wanted to point out that if you think it’s okay for alcohol to be legal, then how can you say it’s wrong for marijuana to be. I know this is a slippery slope, some substances certainly should not be legalized for recreational use. From my personal observations of marijuana I don’t see it being worse than alcohol. In fact I view alcohol as being worse to abuse than marijuana. Although I have one foot on the fence, the opposite one is in the pot field, so to say. I still haven’t come to a final decision, I thought I had, but something changed my mind.

The thinking that marijuana is dangerous is careful thinking. It certainly can be, but I cannot see how it is worse than alcohol. You can read about prohibition, and what it caused. Much like what we have now, the war on drugs. We basically have the same types of criminal organizations running the black market for this substance all over the world. The Mafia may or may not have been as bad as the cartels that run the underground marijuana trade. I just think if people wanna smoke pot, let them. It’s not my business. As long as they aren’t hurting anyone , why should I care? I know some will say this is wrong, but if you ever have a drink after work, or a beer at the game or two, I just think you have no right to bash other vices.

Everything in moderation.

I know conservatives that are libertarian leaning in Colorado. At first, best the pot legalization was the best thing; now I am detecting some "buyer's remorse".

Hickenlooper’s comment was purely political.

The people who are offended at his comment are his base. They’ll vote for him no matter what. They may get irritated at his comment - but thye’ll still vote for him.

The people he was aiming his comment at were the undecided voters who haven’t chosen between him and Beauprez. Hickenlooper is trying to make himself appear as the mainstream rational choice in November.

Well, there’s that, and his efforts to tighten up on guns. Yeah, that’s all gonna make him popular. The colorados already got rid of a couple dirt bags that double X’ed them on guns.

I don't know about you, but just because I can does not require that I must. (And, I don't.)

No no...you're using entirely too much common sense there. Isn't that the whole philosophy this Country was founded on? Freewill? Just because it's legal, doesn't mean you should do it, but I'll be damned if I have anyone tell me I can or cannot do something. So long as I'm not infringing on anyone else rights, it's nunyabidness.

That is far and away the most ignorant statement on this thread.
