A court in the Belarusian capital Minsk has jailed eight Ukrainian football fans after they sang an insulting song about Russian President Vladimir Putin.
One man was sent to prison for 10 days for possessing fascist symbols. Seven others were jailed for five days for using obscene language.
They had joined in anti-Putin chants and songs at the Euro 2016 qualifier between Ukraine and Belarus.
A number of Belarusian fans were also convicted and fined.
Both local and visiting fans at the Euro 2016 qualifier between Ukraine and Belarus in Borisov came together in a rousing rendition of a well-known song - which has became a popular expression of opposition to Putin in Ukraine, the Belarusian paper Nasha Niva reports.
Belarusian fans are also heard voicing their solidarity with their Ukrainian counterparts by chanting the signature slogan of the Maidan protests in Kiev - Slava Ukrayini ("Glory to Ukraine").
The Ukrainians return the favour by chanting Zhyve Belarus ("Long live Belarus").

I'm not sure if BBC actually wrote the headline. The headline is found at BBC under Blog News from Elsewhere.
As I said, I'm not sure of the specifics of the arrests, if they were really related to the chanting or not, but I do find the anti Putin chanting in Belarus interesting.

It basically just means “Putin is a dickhead”. The la-la-la part around it is common for many football chants - i.e when someone flops “women leave the field! la-la-la-la-la”.
There was a term ‘hooliganism’ in Soviet judicial practice, which is inherited by most post-Soviet nations, as well as Soviet-influenced East Europe, Far East and Middle East nations.
Here is a Google translated definition: ‘Hooliganism, that is the gross violation of public order expressing obvious disrespect for society.’
It basically comes in three forms, the least one is a petty hooliganism which is an administrative offense (or infraction as it is known in Anglo-American system if I’m not mistaking) and as you can see from definition largely similar to that you guys call disorderly conduct.
The most popular forms of petty hooliganism are public drunkenness and/or using obscene language in public.
In that sense it doesn’t make any difference who was a subject of their chants. They could say Bush, Obama, Dalai Lama or an opposing team player in said context and it would make a punishable offense anyway.
It won’t make such a nice anti-Russian headline though.
In this case they chanting was against an old Soviet hooligan, a nasty little brute who has looted Russia and is invading his neighbors.

Gosh, thank you so much, as an American I sure am happy that a Russian active duty soldier tells me it is OK to express dislike for the murdering thug that runs Russia and has us having to move military units in place to defend against his aggressions as he invades his neighbors.
