Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend were killed in a car accident in the Dominican Republic, agent Brian Mejia has confirmed to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Taveras was 22.
GM John Mozeliak expressed his condolences to the family according to USA Today, but said the team was awaiting more details before making a formal announcement. MLB announced the news on Twitter.
Taveras made his MLB debut with St. Louis this season and hit .239 in 80 games. Taveras hit a game-tying pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh inning of Game 2 of the NLCS against the Giants two weeks ago Sunday.
Before the season, Baseball America ranked Taveras as the third best prospect in baseball, saying he was an "all-star in the making." Taveras was expected to compete for an outfield job in spring training.
Our condolences go out to family and friends of both Taveras and his girlfriend.
Cardinal ping a roo
Truly awful news. I saw him play in both Memphis and St. Louis.
Very sad news. Rest in peace.
I got to see him play in Springfield once.
Too young
Anyone who followed his minor league play knows that he had yet to realize his potential as a power hitter in the majors. I watched him with great anticipation, waiting for the explosion that I knew was due to come.
Sad news.
he was expected to compete for a starter job next season? wow
