New Poll Gives Maine’s Governor a Commanding Lead

Maine’s Republican governor, Paul LePage, has opened up a 10-point lead over his Democratic challenger, Representative Michael H. Michaud, according to new poll released Sunday for The Maine Sunday Telegram/Portland Press Herald.

Mr. LePage’s 45-to-35-percent lead is outside the poll’s margin of sampling error and has struck fear in the hearts of Democrats. Previous polls had shown the race a dead heat between Mr. LePage and Mr. Michaud.

A third candidate, Eliot Cutler, an independent, continues to trail, with the new poll giving him 16 percentage points.

The poll has led Maine Democrats to turn up the heat on Mr. Cutler’s supporters, urging them to abandon Mr. Cutler and vote for Mr. Michaud; otherwise, they say, Mr. LePage is likely to win re-election.

The Michaud camp has put out a new television ad featuring erstwhile Cutler supporters who have switched to Mr. Michaud. The campaign has urgently asked Democrats to share the ad through Facebook.

On Monday, NextGen Climate Maine, a group financed by Tom Steyer, the California billionaire and environmentalist, is scheduled to hold a news conference in Portland to call for voters to unite behind Mr. Michaud. Former Cutler supporters are expected to be on hand.

The Pingree Press ( the Press in Maine is owned by billionaire financier and husband of first district representative Chellie Pingree who has her eyes on bigger and greater things, shudder) is trying to mobilize the Dem base by scaring them.

There is no way a positive article about LePage would ever appear in the Pingree Press cohort otherwise.

This picture of Mike Michaud's campaign finance director came out recently.

I think it's from when he was campaigning for gay rights - the picture has been around for a while, and the fellow hasn't denied it's him.

Mike Michaud is a state joke. I remember that he is connected with one of the dirtiest politicians of Maine, the Democrat John Martin.

Best election news I’ve heard yet. He’s a no-apologies conservative. He had a tough childhood, leaving an abusive home in his early teens, so he’s no shrinking violet.
