TORONTO - Here's the story: Toronto's new mayor is John Tory.
As the polls predicted, the frontrunner cruised to victory on Monday night defeating Olivia Chow and Doug Ford in the race for the city's top job.
The Tory win caps off a 10-month long campaign and sets the stage for a much quieter Toronto City Hall after Mayor Rob Ford's turbulent reign.
Doug Ford is now living in a van down by the river.
Sorry for my ignorance, but is this good news for Canadian/Toronto conservatives?
So-so. Tory’s a fiscal conservative but he’s an old-school crony capitalist. The best news is that the marxist came in a distant third.
He’s a Progressive Conservative. The province is run by the Liberals so this is a bright spot in the run up to next fall’s federal general election.
Sort of. Chow was the communist. Ford the fiscal conservative. Tory straddles the middle somewhat. Overall a nice guy who lost a few different elections over the years including mayor in 2003. He was due this time I suppose.
Canada Ping!
Well, Hell my Canadian FRiends, your doing a heck of a lot better than New York, NY!
Canadian politics can be very fluid. One pattern I have noticed is that when it come to the 3 levels of government Federal Provincial and Municipal Canada doesn’t seem to want the same party or group running all 3 at the same time. So you often get one party running one or the other and then the remaining one in opposition. Currently from a Toronto perspective you have conservatives at the Federal, Liberal at the provincial and now somewhat conservative at the city.
With a name like Tory in Canada, it can be a definite edge.
Is it a Ford van?
As I have often said, John Tory’s name is a misnomer. Fiscally he’s conservative, other than that, he gets along with the lefties pretty well. He’s also one of those “most muslims are lovely people, there’s just a few bad apples”.
Is there anyone in Canada who doesn't?
At least they know who their enemies are.
My understanding is that the parties are separate on the different levels. The Federal Liberal Party and the Ontario Liberal Party are not the same. Even more so in Quebec, where the Quebec Liberal Party is organized to keep the province in Canada, so contains both liberals and conservatives. This is a tactical alliance to win against the Parti Quebecois in provincial elections. Past Quebec Liberal leader Jean Charest was also a leading member of the Tories. Provinces in Canada have a lot more sovereignty over their affairs in relation to the federal government than US states.
Chow down on that, lefties.
Half a con is better than no con, I suppose. Pity for Doug Ford, he was a loyal brother and probably every bit as able in political terms as his departed brother too, without as much baggage, but I guess he had to pay the price.
