I would just head out of the city to get my soda and the neighbiring would be getting the tax. Morons!

That crowd looks like a comedy skit.
Especially the four eyed militant at the microphone with the power salute.
Shame that good men have to fight in all corners of the world so these clowns can bitch about soda.

“It will levy a penny-per-ounce tax on most sugar-sweetened beverages and is estimated to raise more than $1 million per year.”
It won’t raise five bucks if the obviously daffy (photo) framers didn’t have the foresight to include Corn Sweetener.
Nobody uses sugar anymore.
To: Oldeconomybuyer
Hope they realize their non fat mocha late’ or spiced chai from Starbucks, Caribou Coffee, or Panera Bread Company, has more sugar and corn syrup sweeteners than soda.

Typical vapid, brain-dead liberalism.

Campaign Co-Chair Jack Daniels called Berkeleys win a tipping point. I think you will now see many, many other cities and communities around the country looking at this as a genuine public policy to address the diabetes and obesity crisis that we face, he said.
Jack Daniels was pushing this? we know where his hopes lie.
What they will see is folks buying just over the city limits.

Where is the Berkley newspaper headline “Women and minorities hurt the most by new soda tax”?

These kind of taxes are just dumb. What will happen is most people will buy their soda in Albany, in Richmond, in Oakland, etc... And most businesses that sell soda in Berkeley will lose business. Berkeley is not a big city, and you can get to any one of 5 nearby cities in 5 minutes or less.

So a 2 liter bottle will have a .68 cent additional tax levied on the purchase....
Idiots.....
They just caused a black market to open up and will not even remotely make an additional million dollars in revenue but will most likely lose revenue
Nobody in their right mind will pay a penny per ounce tax on soda....when they can buy it literally a few miles away...

I don’t think it will be a black market. Berkley isn’t that large or walled off from adjacent locales without the tax. And they can’t make it illegal to possess a bottle of pop without “their” tax stamp.
It just means sales inside their city limits will plunge, and the merchants take the hit.
