The apology follows the dated term found in updated Army regulations policy as an acceptable classification for 'a person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa.' The newly revised policy now limits the acceptable terms to 'Black or African American.'
The U.S. Army has backtracked with an apology after approving the term "Negro" as an acceptable reference for black service members.
The decision comes two days after the dated term was found listed as an acceptable classification for "a person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa" in section 6-2 of the Army's AR 600-20 regulations.
The revised policy now limits the acceptable terms to "Black or African American."
"The U.S. Army fully recognized, and promptly acted, to remove outdated language in Army Regulation 600-20 as soon as it was brought to our attention," Army spokeswoman Lieutenant Colonel Alayne Conway said in a statement.
"We apologize to anyone we offended," she said.
According to Defense Power Research about 21% of active-duty members of the Army are black.

I don’t understand, Why the change?
But cracka and white boy are still good.
“Negro” is to black what “Caucasian” is to white.
Interesting that I never saw Caucasian as a racist remark.
And, Dixie is a bad word?
On the same line of thought, Mongoloid is acceptable for Asian-descent, but many would consider that “racist” despite it’s anthropological propriety.
Actually in Spanish La Negra is Black what going happen to that description
That’s racist against Hispanics or something, I’m quite certain of it.
“Negro” is Spanish for black.
“But cracka and white boy are still good.”
Don’t forget ‘gringo’. Gringo is also a quite acceptable reference to Whitey.
why is the word “negro” so offensive?...it just means black...its perfectly rational....
the problem with “mongoloid” is that people with Down’s syndrome used to be called that....
So what are they going to do with the 100’s of thousands of Birth Certificates that rightfully document the race as it really is?!?
“why is the word negro so offensive?...it just means black...its perfectly rational....”

Rational?
You really expect the P.C. crowd to be rational?
The entire thing is tiring, and funny. :-)
.
It’s a generic term for someone with dark skin. But if you mumble or slur your words, it might sound like something else. Thin skinned people don’t seem to like it either.
It’s now very common to hear people say, ‘I’m rather offended by that.’ As if that gives them certain rights. It’s actually nothing more... than a whine. ‘I find that offensive.’ It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. ‘I am offended by that.’ Well, so f—king what.” -S. I was at Hollywood Park, back in the ‘80’s. There was a horse running in the 7th, named “Mia Negro”. A bunch of Black guys were standing around, discussing their picks. Suddenly one guy burst out “I ain’t won all day, this race I’m goin’ with ME - A NEGRO”. Everyone within earshot, Black, White, Latino, and Asian all broke out in laughter - as it should be !
Oh-oh - we have a “Negro Mountain” here in Pennsylvania.
Exactly. It’s just a long-standing official racial category- Caucasoid, Mongoloid, Negroid. I don’t know how they manage when they have to use or listen to French or Spanish. They must have a fit.
